SOFTBALL BEAT : SWINGING A HEAVY BAT.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore

Her nickname is Bam-Bam, for good reason. Sylmar High's Veronica Ramos can hit the ball. Hard.

And far.

Last week, the transfer from Van Nuys crushed two balls that didn't land until they reached the Spartans junior varsity junior varsity

``Those were a couple of tape-measure shots,'' Sylmar coach Chuck Miller said.

Ramos, an All-City selection last year with the Wolves, wasted little time impressing her new team with her power potential.

``We knew it was there from the beginning of practice,'' Miller said.

Ramos bats fourth, and the Spartans count on her to provide most of the offensive punch.

Moving up in the world

The Bobcats (5-1) open against highly regarded Alemany (6-3) on Friday at 3 p.m. in the High Desert softball tournament at Lancaster City Park.

The pitching matchup features Boron's Summer Richardson and Alemany's Kim Deiner, two of the state's best all-purpose players.

``Everyone expects us to lose,'' said Richardson, coming off a 20-strikeout performance against Rosamond. ``But I think we can play with anyone. To us, Alemany is just another team.''

Welcome to `small ball'

Chaminade is making some changes after losing four of its first six games.

The Eagles are making some subtle adjustments to try to spark an offense that has scored just three times all year.

So, the emphasis now is on things like bunting bunting, common name for small, plump birds of the family Fringillidae (finch family). Among the American buntings are the indigo bunting, in which the summer plumage of the male reflects sunlight as a rich, metallic blue; the painted bunting, or nonpareil ( , stealing and moving runners.

``We're going to force other teams to defend little ball,'' Chaminade coach Steve Harrington said. ``I've always been a big believer of small ball.''

Harrington is pleased with the Eagles defense and the pitching of ace Maureen LeCocq, who is 1-4 despite giving up just two earned runs and posting an 0.34 ERA.

The problem is a lack of power.

``We just want to give Maureen a little more support,'' Harrington said. ``She doesn't need much more than one or two more runs a game.''

Blumfield of dreams

standout Cara Blumfield is known primarily for her defense - she is a spectacular shortstop.

Because of her talents in the field, her offense sometimes gets overlooked.

Blumfield is making it harder to ignore her batting. Blumfield is the Conquistadores' leader in RBI and triples and is third on the team in batting average batting average
