Paraclete is on a serious roll. ``I'm pleasantly surprised,'' coach Margaret Neill said. ``Everyone on the team is starting to hit. We had faced so many good pitchers early in the season. It was never like we weren't trying, but I think the kids got down. But we stayed patient and finally got it.''

``At first we were struggling, then we came up with the hits when we needed them,'' said Alaniz, noting the win over La Reina was like a microcosm of the season thus far. ``Beating La Reina was really a big win for us because it boosted our confidence.''

The teams are familiar with each other through Chaminade coach Steve Harrington, who coaches a Stealth travel ball team during the summer that some of the Conquistadores play for.

``It's not an aggressive rivalry, it's a very supportive rivalry,'' Harrington said. ``The kids are friends and very supportive of each other.''

PLAYOFF BOUND

North Hollywood is playing its best softball in recent memory, dominating the East Valley League with a 9-1 record after Tuesday's 7-6 win over second-place Canoga Park. As a result, the Huskies may finally earn a berth into the City Section Championship division playoffs, which was called the 4-A Division until this year.

North Hollywood has now won two straight East Valley League titles. Interestingly, the Huskies have four sophomores in the starting lineup For the line of action figures, see .

``We have a great balance of leadership and youth with our seniors and sophomores,'' North Hollywood coach Frank Galvan said. ``Depending on where we get seeded, I like our chances of getting to the second round.''

One of the most successful small-school programs of the '90s, Boron has won a state-record 78 straight Desert Mountain League games, but has never gone undefeated. The Bobcats, coming off a 20-2 win over Big Pine on Tuesday, are ranked No. 1 in Division VI and No. 1 in the state small-schools poll (Division V) by Cal-Hi Sports.

``I think we can manage to go undefeated,'' pitcher Jennifer Jenkins said. ``Everyone on the team is giving it their all, and we all want to be No. 1 in everything.''

Jenkins, a 5-foot-9 junior right-hander, has yielded just one earned run in 104 innings with 13 shutouts, three no-hitters and 138 strikeouts.
