SOFTBALL BEAT: SOFTBALL POWERS FACE OFF.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Daily News Staff Writer

Quartz Hill and Highland highs will be trying to remain unbeaten in the Golden League when they play today at Quartz Hill High at 3:15 p.m.

Quartz Hill, ranked No. 9 by the Daily News, is 12-2-1, 2-0 in league; fifth-ranked Highland is 12-2, 1-0.They split two games in preseason tournaments.

``They're a very good team and we're pretty equal,'' said Quartz Hill pitcher Jodie Cox (11-2-1). ``Both of us can beat the other team.''

That much has been proven. Highland beat the Rebels 3-1 in the Hart tournament five weeks ago. Quartz Hill rebounded by shutting out the Bulldogs 5-0 in the High Desert Softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  Classic final on April 6.

lineups, top-notch hitting and stellar pitching. Factor in the Golden League race, and this matchup is as good as it gets.

Quartz Hill's main weapons besides Cox are speedy outfielders Penny Wood, Shauna Murray and Kellie Cox, shortstop Amber Slaton and clean-up hitting catcher Olaya Salazar (.357).

Highland rotates pitchers Kelly Presten (4-2, 1.56 ERA) and Nichole Rawson (4-0, 1.19 ERA).

Cox, who pitched a two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts and also homered in Quartz Hill's 5-0 win over Highland, says the plan is for the Rebels to be aggressive offensively.

``We need to come out swinging and get some hits and runs,'' Cox said.

The win last time did nothing to lower Cox's respect for her adversaries.

``They can hit and their infield is awesome,'' she said.
