SOFTBALL BEAT: COX NEARING HOMER MARK : SHE'S 3 SHY OF LARGE-SCHOOLS RECORD.

Sophomore Kellie Cox, her sister, leads the team in hitting at .481.

Speaking of home runs: Highland's Natalie Rawson on Tuesday hit the first over-the-fence home run against Jodie Cox since Cox's sophomore year.

Quartz Hill won the game 2-1.

 on Friday.

Jennifer Jenkins threw her third no-hitter of the season, struck out nine and improved to 14-0, including 10 shutouts.

``It felt so good,'' Jenkins said. ``Our captains Cheryl Davies and Tricia Ballinger brought the Silly String, and we all sprayed the coaches. It was cool.''

Paraclete power: Paraclete's pitching depth paid off last Saturday, as the Spirits shut out La Salle La Salle, city (1990 pop. 9,717), La Salle co., N Ill., on the Illinois River; settled 1830, inc. 1852. Ace Amanda Wachsmuth, who was rested in those games, is scheduled to pitch today against Crossroads. Wachsmuth, 12-4 as a freshman last season but now rotating with right-handers Lauren McDonald and Sara Gonzales, said she is ``98 percent recovered''from an early-season hip injury and would prefer more innings.

``Pitching is scarce and far between,'' Wachsmuth said. ``On this team, when you pitch you have to be on. If you don't do your job, you get bumped.''

McDonald, a junior, threw a two-hitter against La Salle and hard-throwing freshman Gonzales tossed a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts against St. Bonaventure.

Paraclete has a big weekend. The Spirits meet Alpha League rival L.A. Baptist at 3:15 p.m. Friday at Jane Reynolds, looking to avenge a·venge

``We want revenge,'' Wachsmuth said. ``We came over there last time and lost. This time we're going to be pumped.''

It won't get any easier department Littlerock (3-15, 0-4), outscored 24-3 in two Desert Diamond losses on Saturday, takes an eight-game losing streak into its toughest week of the season: The Lobos host league bully Quartz Hill today at 3:15 and travel to longtime power Highland on Thursday.

``I can't remember the last game we won,'' second-year coach Tammy Zammardi said. ``It's been a rough season.''

Undertalented to begin with, Littlerock has been plagued by injuries - top hitter Alison Gorny went down with a season-ending knee injury last week - and academic ineligibility.

``I'm just trying to encourage the girls to do better,'' Zammardi said. ``We've got a bunch of girls now who basically are just out there to have fun. To them, softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  is just recreational. Of course, that makes it tough to compete against Quartz Hill and Highland because those teams have a bunch of college-bound players.''
