SOFTBALL BEAT: CALABASAS FINDS A GROOVE : ROSSON NEARLY UNHITTABLE, HITTERS PRODUCING FOR COYOTES.

Byline: Jim Inghram Daily News Staff Writer

As expected things are going quite swimmingly for Calabasas in the Frontier League The Frontier League, based in Troy, Illinois, is a professional, independent baseball organization located in the Midwestern United States and Western Pennsylvania. It operates mostly in cities not served by Major or Minor League Baseball teams and is not affiliated with either. .

The Coyotes, off to a 4-0 start, are getting plenty of offense and pitcher Amy Rosson is becoming unhittable.

Rosson, a junior right-hander, improved to 8-2 in her last outing, a 12-0 victory over Santa Clara Santa Clara, city, Cuba

The five shutout innings moved her current string of scoreless innings to 31.

``Amy is in a really good groove right now,'' said assistant coach Mark Lyons. ``It seems like whenever she needs to make a big pitch, she does.''

The offense is producing throughout the lineup.

Freshman Carly Weinstein has been impeccable at the leadoff spot. She reached base all four times she batted against the Saints, scored three times and drove in three.

The Spartans, who are 4-2 in the Pacific View League but fell to 5-8 overall after the sweep, are generally considered the second strongest team in the Pacific View League behind Camarillo.

The Musketeers have struggled a bit in losing their first two games in league play but improved to 6-5 overall.

Big inning: In Moorpark's sweep of Rio Mesa, Kim Wynigear was pivotal in the outcome of the first game.

Wilson's heroics: Westlake beat Agoura 4-0 Wednesday, but the game's outcome might have been different if not for two defensive gems from Warriors junior shortstop Kaitlyn Wilson in the first inning.

The Chargers' next batter, Lauren Casper, hit a sharp grounder that was headed up the middle, but Wilson ranged far to her left and was able to get Casper by a step.

By the time Wilson completed the throw, she was halfway between second and first.

Still unbeaten: Newbury Park improved to 3-0 in the Marmonte League with a 2-1 victory over Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Katie Stokx pitched and batted the Panthers to the victory. She singled in a run in the first and limited the Lancers' productive lineup to a run and five hits.

An intriguing matchup scheduled for today is Calabasas at Agoura. It was rained out on its original date and the schools agreed to play it during Agoura's spring break. Calabasas is off next week.

The Chargers and Coyotes have played once already this season with Calabasas winning 11-0.

The game will provide an excellent opportunity for both teams, Agoura to regain some confidence after starting league play 0-4 and Calabasas to continue its recent string of impressive wins.

Getting a jump: About the only thing that went wrong for Westlake in two Marmonte League victories last week was a penchant for leaving base too early.

AREA TOP 5

The first month of the season has just passed. Here's a look at the best teams to this point:

1. Camarillo (10-1, 7-0): The Nevard's (Kathryn and Meredith) are nearly unhittable.

2. Newbury Park (8-1, 3-0): Most opposing coaches felt the Panthers would be one of the Marmonte League's better teams, especially if their pitching came around. Well, it has. Katie Stokx is 7-0.

3. Simi Valley (8-0, 2-0): Pitcher Brittney Green is 7-0 and is a threat with the bat, too.

4. Westlake (8-1, 3-1): The Warriors are the surprise team of the month and are capable of winning the league.

5. Calabasas (8-2-1, 4-0): Amy Rosson has 31 consecutive scoreless innings.
