SOFTBALL BEAT: BORON HAS EYE ON RECORD : BOBCATS 4 SHY OF MARK FOR CONSECUTIVE LEAGUE WINS.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Daily News Staff Writer

Boron boron (bōr`ŏn) [New Gr. from borax], chemical element; symbol B; at. no. 5; at. wt. 10.81; m.p. about 2,300°C;; sublimation point about 2,550°C;; sp. gr. 2.3 at 25°C;; valence +3.  High is chasing the California record for consecutive league softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  wins, and with junior Jennifer Jenkins on the mound, the prospects look good.

Jenkins has pitched every inning for the Bobcats (9-0, 3-0), who have won 70 straight Desert Mountain League games - four short of Alemany's mark of 74 straight league wins (1976-1983).

If Boron wins at home against Desert Christian (today), Mammoth (Friday), Bethel Bethel, in the Bible

 on April 23.

``At first we were not taking the record very seriously,'' Jenkins said. ``But now everyone is saying, `You're going to get the record.' Things are going good.''

Jenkins, a 5-foot-9 right-hander, is 9-0 with a 0.12 ERA (one earned run earned run

The team has committed 13 errors in nine games, a class above Division VI competition.

``It's not just me why we're doing so well, it's the whole team,'' Jenkins said.

``Jennifer Jenkins is doing really good, and we're also hitting and playing good defense,'' senior center fielder Tricia Ballinger said. ``We're doing a lot better than people thought, and some of the wins have come against bigger schools.''

Coach Mick Van Horn likes the way his team has adjusted after graduating Summer Richardson (now at Cal State Northridge), who surpassed 20 pitching wins each of the last two seasons, notched 24 career no-hitters and was one of small-school softball's most feared power hitters with eight career home runs.

``We're getting very solid pitching from Jennifer Jenkins and our offense is scoring enough runs to win,'' Van Horn said. ``Overall, I'm pretty happy with the way things are going. Getting the win record was one of the goals we set and it just gives us something to shoot for.''

Boron has outscored opponents 69-6, but Van Horn sees his team as a scrappy scrap·py 1

bunch: The Bobcats have just 10 extra-base hits and no home runs.

``We don't have a lot of power, and that is something new around here,'' Van Horn said. ``We're getting timely hits with runners on base.''

Boron has not fared as well in the playoffs, falling 1-0 to Orange Lutheran in the Division VI semifinals last season after losing the Division V championship to Temecula the year before.

``I want to and win the CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing. CIF formats are defined by their resolution, and standards both above and below the original resolution have been established. The original CIF is also known as Full CIF (FCIF). ,'' Jenkins said. ``That's my goal.''

Cox continues: Fresh from winning the High Desert Classic tournament the night before, Quartz Hill (14-1) beat Saugus 6-1 on Tuesday, the Rebels' 14th straight nonleague win after an opening loss to Westlake.
