Alaniz, who played one year at Cal State Northridge, attracted the interest of the Hoosiers at the Firecracker Tournament in Colorado last month. An examination of her transcripts, however, revealed she was three units short of transfer eligibility.

Upon learning this, Alaniz rushed to CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  and enrolled in a five-week course.

``I have to get a C-plus or better,'' she said. ``I'm pretty sure I can do it.''

The course consists of only one exam, meaning it will be do or die for Alaniz.

The class textbook has been a constant companion of Alaniz's on her trip to St. Louis for the ASA Asa (ā`sə), in the Bible, king of Judah, son and successor of Abijah. He was a good king, zealous in his extirpation of idols. When Baasha of Israel took Ramah (a few miles N of Jerusalem), Asa bought the help of Benhadad of Damascus and  Gold 18-under National Fastpitch Championships.

Her recruitment by Indiana has been so whirlwind that Alaniz has yet to visit the Bloomington, Ind., campus.

``But I did get to do a virtual tour on the computer,'' she said. ``It's a beautiful campus and I really want to go. There is some pressure on me (to pass the class), but if I put in the time I'll be OK.''

Alaniz and her teammates on the Woodland Hills-based Stealth were eliminated from the tournament with two losses on Friday.

The team lost to the California Choppers 2-0 in the morning and the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Belles 1-0 in the afternoon.

``It's a big disappointment,'' Alaniz said. ``But now I get to really focus on my class.''

It caught the attention of dcTalk's Toby McKeehan, who subsequently signed them to Gotee Records. Only a limited number were ever produced.  for the players and their families. In their free time most have gone shopping or visited tourist sites throughout the area.

Nicole Angelo of Thousand Oaks High and the Anaheim Batbusters took a trip with her mother and brother to the Gateway Arch.

Angelo took the ride to the top of the 630-foot monument.

``It was cool,'' she said. ``It was really clear and you can see a long way, all the buildings and (Mississippi) river. It wasn't scary at all. People said it was going to be shaky and feel like you might fall, but it wasn't like that at all.'' . . .

Fortune's future teammate at Illinois, Kathryn Nevard, was also considering taking another look at the campus after her team was eliminated earlier Friday.

``I'm thinking about it (going to Illinois),'' she said. ``But I'm leaving for good on Aug. 15, so I'm going to be there soon enough, so I probably won't.''
