SOFTBALL : NEWBURY PARK GETS 1-HIT WIN FROM FOX NEWBURY PARK 1, THOUSAND OAKS 0.

Byline: Dave Desmond Daily News Staff Writer

Yes, Virginia, you just signed a recruit with an iron will.

Pitcher Kristi Fox once again outlasted a worthy opponent, this time outdueling Thousand Oaks' Jennifer Sharron in Newbury Park's 1-0 Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. Fox, who last week committed to play at Virginia, forced across Candace Roberts with the game's only run when she walked with two out and the bases loaded in the top of the 12th.

It was No. 2 Newbury Park's second extra-inning victory over Sharron and the No. 4 Lancers lanc·er

(13-5, 4-4). The Panthers beat them 1-0 in 21 innings earlier this season.

``It felt like the same game all over again,'' said Fox, who struck out seven and allowed only one hit, a ninth-inning single to center by Erika Hanson.

Hanson's single was the only time the Lancers managed to hit the ball into the outfield.

``For 33 innings, they have been the better team,'' Thousand Oaks coach Gary Walin said. ``And Kristi Fox has been just a little bit better.''

Indeed, Newbury Park (16-3-1, 8-0-1) fared only slightly better against Sharron (12-5), a junior left-hander who struck out nine and allowed only three hits through nine innings.

Sharron, who pitched all 13 innings in a gritty 1-0 victory over Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  on Monday, appeared to tire in the 10th, when Newbury Park loaded the bases with one out.

She wriggled out of that jam but found herself in the same situation in the 12th. This time, she induced Tina Roscoe to pop out before yielding the two-out walk to Fox.

In the pitching-rich Marmonte League, seven-inning games - as well as runs - have become a rarity. Going an extra five innings no longer even raises an eyebrow eyebrow /eye·brow/ (-brou)

``We joke that we've played more extra-inning games than anyone else in our league,'' Fox said.

For the first time on Tuesday, Fox missed her mark. Thousand Oaks owns that distinction, having played five extra-inning games to the Panthers' four.

All but one of Thousand Oaks' five losses this season have come beyond the seventh inning in·ning
