It won its second Western District championship in the last three years, defeating the Westlake-Agoura team 7-2 in the finals on June 25 in Sylmar.

Hart went on to beat Westlake-Agoura again in the finals, with pitcher Jessica Shults allowing six hits in six innings and catcher Amy Moore hitting safely in all three of her at-bats and driving in two runs. With the victory, Hart brought its season record to 24-1, having outscored its opponents 198-42 along the way.

The Western District is as far as the 8-and-under age group can advance, although Hart will still play in two more tournaments before wrapping up their season. But they've already reached their pinnacle.

``We've already reached our goal by winning district,'' said coach Bob Shults. ``Now it's about having fun.''

Jessica Shults (who did not issue a walk in 39 innings in the Western District tournament), Moore and first baseman Allison Lewis have been playing on the team since they were 5 and were competing against 8-year olds.

``We're just breaking ground at this age,'' said Bob Shults. ``They're starting so young now, people at the state level came out to watch (the District tournament) and they couldn't believe the caliber of the kids.''
