SOFTBALL; AT LAST, BORON OWNS THE TITLE.

Byline: Jack Pollon Special to the Daily News

LAKEWOOD - Many high school softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  teams would have been thrilled just to get to the Southern Section finals.

Not Boron boron (bōr`ŏn) [New Gr. from borax], chemical element; symbol B; at. no. 5; at. wt. 10.81; m.p. about 2,300°C;; sublimation point about 2,550°C;; sp. gr. 2.3 at 25°C;; valence +3. . The Division VI Bobcats (21-5) had been there so many times - two championship losses since 1997 and seven losses in the semis or finals since 1993 - they probably have their own parking space at Lakewood's Mayfair Park, the annual site of the final.

So it was all or nothing in Saturday's late-afternoon championship game against Linfield, a familiar enough opponent considering the Lions had beaten Boron - and supposedly invincible Summer Richardson - in 1997.

This time was different. Boron won its first title 2-0 and the sleepy sleepy

``It was good to finally get the monkey off our back,'' coach Mick Van Horn said. ``We've been focused all year. The girls' desire and dedication was the key for us getting back here and finally winning it all.''

In the beginning, it looked like a case of here we go again. Linfield loaded the bases in the top of the first with none out - not a good situation for Boron considering runs are usually at a premium in a championship game.

But Jennifer Jenkins, the same player who won her first 24 games last season only to lose in the final, wasn't going to succumb suc·cumb

Linfield (22-9), which has won five section championships, threatened once more in the top of the seventh, putting runners on second and third with one out, but Jenkins came through again. She ended up holding the Lions to four hits with six strikeouts, boosting her record to 21-4 - 45-5 over the last two seasons - with a 0.07 ERA and 228 strikeouts in 159 innings.
