With the Southern Section softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. The first big tournament, the 11th annual Tournament by the Sea, runs today through Sunday at Camino Real Park in Ventura.

The tournament has two divisions - 18-and-under and 16-and-under - with three pools of five teams in each.

``Typically, this tournament has teams from throughout Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  and Central California Central California can refer to one of several divisions or regions of the U.S state of California:

Kaspar also said the tournament has increased in popularity because of the competition, quality of umpiring and the weather.

``A lot of tournaments in the summer are in places like Barstow or Riverside,'' Kaspar said. ``I think teams like coming to play in the beach weather.''

Area teams include the California Raiders from Valencia in the 18-and-under division. In the 16-and-under division, Running Wild of Canyon Country, the Stealth stealth

The Kaos 18s team is based in Chatsworth but includes two area players - Brandy Stepp of Vasquez and Valencia's Gretchen Pawlak.

``This is a pretty new team,'' said manager Dave Wilder, ``but we have some talented players and an excellent mixture of players. I think we are going to be really good.

``We're excited to get going and see where we match up.''

The tournament is an ASA Asa (ā`sə), in the Bible, king of Judah, son and successor of Abijah. He was a good king, zealous in his extirpation of idols. The division winners also are invited to play in the ASA International Friendship Tournament at Anaheim in August.

The invitation-only tournament features teams from throughout the U.S., Japan and Canada.

``That should give the teams some extra motivation,'' Kaspar said. ``It will be quite an honor for any team to play in a tournament where they can represent their team, area and country.''
