SOFTBALL: TRAVEL BALL TO START.Byline: Jim Inghram Daily News Staff Writer With the Southern Section softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies' championships taking place today and Saturday, most area players are finished with their high school commitments and are back with travel teams for the summer. The first big tournament, the 11th annual Tournament by the Sea, begins today through Sunday at Camino Real Park in Ventura. The tournament has two divisions, 18 and under and 16 and under. Kaspar noted the tournament has increased in popularity throughout the years, partly because of the competition, the quality of umpiring and the weather. ``A lot of tournaments in the summer are in places like Barstow or Riverside,'' Kaspar said. ``I think teams like coming to play in the beach weather.'' Area-based teams competing in the 18-under division include the Diamonds from Moorpark and the Camarillo Riptide. The So Cal Kaos is based in Chatsworth but has players from local high schools on its roster, including Westlake's Annie Domenic and Julia Knasin of Royal. ``This is a pretty new team,'' said manager Dave Wilder, ``but we have some talented players and an excellent mixture of players. I think we are going to be really good. ``We're excited to get going and see where we match up.'' The lone local team in the 16-and-under division is the So Cal Shilos of Moorpark.
