Saugus had such a chance to jump on the Michigan-bound junior before she established her rhythm in top of the first, but the Centurions were unable to capitalize. It didn't take long for Taylor to settle into a groove to lead Valencia to a 5-0 victory in a pivotal Foothill League opener for two of the area's top programs.

Taylor has 125 strikeouts and has recorded double-digits in strikeouts in all nine starts.

``The batters are always swinging because all the pitches are strikes,'' Smith said. ``It's sweet.''

Taylor exacted a measure of revenge against a team that handed her and the Vikings their only league loss last season.

``It's always nice to beat a team you lost to,'' Taylor said.

Valencia scored its first run in the second on a hit, an error on a wild pitch.

The Vikings broke the game open in a four-run third inning, when they had three hits and capitalized on two errors. Freshman Amy Moore's pinch-hit two-run double down the right field line highlighted the inning.

Sophomore outfielder Torrie Anderson drew a one-out walk after a dropped popup in foul territory earlier in the at-bat. She was the first of six consecutive Valencia batters to reach base safely.

``(Taylor) threw a great ballgame and we made some mistakes,'' Saugus coach Rich Perez said. ``You can't do that against a team as good as this.''

Saugus will get another chance against Taylor and the Vikings when the teams meet again on April 27.

``It's still early,'' Perez said. ``We'll get over it.''
