SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - Hart High of Newhall softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  coach Cathy Giordano doesn't often let her pitchers hit for themselves, but there was something in the way senior Lindsay Tognetti was swinging the bat during warm-ups that made her deviate from habit and insert Tognetti into the eighth spot in the batting order Noun 1. batting order - (baseball) a list of batters in the order in which they will bat; "the managers presented their cards to the umpire at home plate"

``That's the first time all year outside of preseason games I've let her hit for herself,'' Giordano said.

Hart (3-0) will play the winner of today's semifinal between Valencia and Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Agoura took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Hart answered quickly in the bottom of the frame with five runs.

Junior Meghann Flaherty led off with a single, and freshman shortstop Emily Sudik blasted a double to left to score Flaherty. Tognetti broke the inning open six batters later with a single to left that went under the glove of the left fielder. Three runs scored on the play and Tognetti ended up on third base.
