SOFTBALL: SAUGUS SEEKS HIGH DESERT TITLE.

After a 2-3 start, Saugus High's softball team will seek to get back on track at the 11th annual High Desert Classic, which begins today t Lancaster City Park. The Centurions, who reached the Southern Section Div. I semifinals last year, have won the three-day tournament the past two seasons and are the favorite in the 16-team Division I bracket.

Bolstered by the return of sluggers Victoria Kemp and Tiffany Huff, Saugus must win four in a row, starting today at 5 p.m. against Barstow (0-1).

Kemp, a junior who has committed to Arizona, is batting .333 with one home run and five RBIs in 15 at-bats. She has 15 career home runs, six shy of former Canyon High star Crystl Bustos' Foothill League record. Huff, a Tennessee-bound senior, is batting .286 after hitting .460 with six home runs and 31 RBIs last season.

Alicia Junker (.368), Alex Cueva (.357, one home run, six RBIs), Melissa Koutz (.313) and Sarah Hooper (.308) give Saugus the Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  Valley's most feared lineup. Hooper (1-1, 2.33 ERA) and Jacqueline Taylor (1-2, 2.33 ERA) are the pitchers.

Saugus' losses include two one-run decisions at the highly competitive Bullhead bullhead, common name for several species of fish. See catfish; sculpin.
