SOFTBALL: IT'S THE SAME OLD SCRIPT : CAMARILLO OUSTED AGAIN BY MATER DEI MATER DEI 1 CAMARILLO 0.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Daily News Staff Writer

Three years ago, it was in the Southern Section finals. Last year it was the semifinals. This year, the quarterfinals.

Obviously, the round in which Camarillo High encounters Mater Dei Mater Dei is Latin for "Mother of God", referring to the Virgin Mary. The term has been used to name various institutions, often Catholic, including:
  • Mater Dei Catholic College, Wagga Wagga
  • Mater Dei College, Western Australia
in the softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  playoffs isn't important. The result is the same.

At least that's been the case three out of the last four years, with the latest setback being Thursday's 1-0 Mater Dei victory in the Division I quarterfinals.

At least Camarillo pitcher Kathryn Nevard, who pitched admirably in defeat, has another chance to beat the Monarchs should Camarillo hook up with them next year. Seniors Jill Borchard, Jenn Byrne, Kim Kaspar and Allie Taverner won't have that opportunity.

``I hope we do play them,'' said Nevard, a junior who gave up three hits and struck out four. ``You want to play the best, that's what it's all about. I had fun today even though we lost. I love to play against them.''

``They were really aggressive and they were able to get a couple of hits,'' Nevard said. ``They're a good team.''

Camarillo (21-7) had chances to score against Young, who is headed to the University of Michigan (body, education) University of Michigan - A large cosmopolitan university in the Midwest USA. But each time the Scorpions threatened, Young managed to fight her way out.

Kaspar started the fourth with a single, then pinch-runner Lindsey Calderon stole second and took third on a passed ball. But Young ended the inning by striking out the side.

Kaspar had the only two hits against Young.

``When Mater Dei scored in the first inning, that was big,'' said Camarillo coach Miki Mangan. ``You try to tell your team over and over that (an early run) doesn't matter, but it really does Warren Trotter, better known as Really Doe, is an American rapper from Chicago, Illinois.  her back in a car accident last week. It's doubtful she can pitch the rest of the year, but the Monarchs hope she can play in the field in the next two rounds.

That just means they'll go exclusively with Young, who won her 16th game of the year.

``I accept that challenge,'' Young said. ``I haven't done that since my freshman year, but hopefully I'll be ready.''

Young has been on all three Mater Dei teams that defeated Camarillo in the playoffs.

``It just shows what can happen when two great teams play one another. We know it's never going to be an easy game,'' Young said. ``They're always close games. They're a good team.''
