SOFTBALL: HIGHLAND WINNING NO MATTER THE SITUATION.

Byline: GIDEON RUBIN Special to the Daily News

Extra-inning thrillers. Exciting comebacks. A slugfest one day, a pitcher's duel A pitcher's duel is a term commonly used in baseball when two pitchers face each other and give up very few runs keeping a very close and low scoring game.  the next. It doesn't matter what kind of game Highland High's softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  is involved in these days.

The Bulldogs (9-4 overall, 6-0 Golden League) are finding ways to win all of them in a streak that has made them the league's surprise frontrunner.

After moving into first place April 7 with a 3-1, eight-inning upset victory over Quartz Hill, Highland won a couple of high-scoring games: 12-7 over Palmdale (in a game they trailed 7-1 after two innings INNINGS, estates. The Bulldogs showed Tuesday they can win playing small-ball, claiming a 2-0 victory over defending league champion Lancaster.

``It seems like every game someone else is stepping up for us,'' Highland coach Dan Morrow said.

Against Lancaster game, it was junior shortstop Noel Luongo who emerged as the Bulldogs hero. Luongo, Highland's leading hitter with a .444 average, had two of the Bulldogs' four hits and scored both runs on aggressive baserunning plays. Luongo scored from second in the top of the fourth on Abbie D'Errico's high hopper up the middle that just reached the edge of the outfield grass. ``She caught them off guard with some smart baserunning, and that made a big difference,'' Morrow said. ``She kind of just took over the game. It was pretty exciting.''

Pitcher perfect day: An unusual Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

The Antelope Valley
weather pattern contributed to the pitcher-friendly conditions for Highland and Lancaster at what usually is a hitter-happy Lancaster field.

A prevailing jetstream blowing in from the east - it normally blows out from the west - altered pitch movement in a way hitters were not accustomed to and kept flyballs in the ballpark.

Both pitchers took advantage.

Lancaster sophomore Heather Sandberg (5-3) tossed a four-hitter and struck out 20 batters.``It was a pitcher's climate, and both pitchers put on a show,'' Morrow said. ``It was fun to watch.''

Turnaround: After a 2-7-1 nonleague start, Boron boron (bōr`ŏn) [New Gr. from borax], chemical element; symbol B; at. no. 5; at. wt. 10.81; m.p. about 2,300°C;; sublimation point about 2,550°C;; sp. gr. 2.3 at 25°C;; valence +3.  (5-7-1, 3-0) has dominated Desert Mountain League play, outscoring opponents 43-0.

Crucial to Boron's success has been the emergence of junior outfielder/first baseman Shelby York, who broke out of a 3-for-25 slump to start the season, going 7 for 13 with 10 RBIs and eight runs in three league games.

Other contributors include junior third baseman/catcher Alana Smith (8 for 12 ,11 runs), freshman first baseman Makenna Evans (8 for 13), and junior pitcher Courtney Evans, who pitched a no-hitter in a 10-0 rout of Lucerne Lucerne (lsûrn`), Ger. Luzern (ltsĕrn`), canton (1993 pop.  Valley.
