SOFTBALL: DEAN HOPES TO BE A SPARK AT FIREWORKS.

Byline: JUSTIN FRANK Staff Writer

Camarillo's Lindsey Dean might be playing in the most important set of games in her high school softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  career, and she knows it.

``Just about every college coach you can imagine will be there at some point to watch,'' Camarillo coach Jack Willard said. ``This is a huge oppurtunity for these girls to impress some big-time colleges.''

Dean, who finished with a 0.41 ERA and 240strikeouts in 1542/3 innings for the Scorpions this season and helped them reach the Southern Section Div. I semifinals, is aware of the importance this tourament and said she remains confident.

``This is huge for me,'' said Dean, who will be on the So Cal Pumas 18-and-under team. ``I'm excited and nervous, but I pitch best when I feel this way.''

Dean said she hopes her results in the tournament will solidify her college choices.

``I have a few options now and it would be nice to get a few more,'' Dean said. ``But, there are a lot more spectacular players on the field than me.''

Dean said she is enjoying the fact Camarillo teammate Anissa Lagos will join her on the Pumas club team.

``It's nice to have someone that you see at school with you everyday,'' Dean said.

Although Dean is used to having Lagos behind the plate as her catcher, Lagos is mostly going to play infield during the tournament.

``She is probably not going to catch me,'' Dean said. ``But, it is still nice to have a teammate with me.''
