SOFTBALL: ATHLETICS, BREEZE TAKE SAME WINNING PATHS.

It's almost as if the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Athletics and the Valley Breeze were playing out the same script Tuesday at the 18-under national tournament in Sioux Falls Sioux Falls, city (1990 pop. 100,814), seat of Minnehaha co., SE S.Dak., on the Big Sioux River; settled 1856, inc. as a village 1877, as a city 1883. Settlers abandoned the site in 1862 because of Native American raids, but with the establishment (1865) of Fort , S.D.

The Athletics downed the Washington Braves 3-0 behind Cori Herbert's (Hoover) one-hitter and Justina Kahaku's (Canyon) two-hit, two-run performance. Kahaku scored the Athletics' first run in the second inning on Megan Holbrook's (Chaminade) squeeze bunt.

The Braves mounted a comeback attempt in the seventh, loading the bases with no outs, but Herbert preserved the win by striking out the side.

The Breeze defeated Casey Kaos (Ill.) by the same score. She gave many concerts in which she sang and played comic musical sketches on the piano.  tossed a two-hitter with five strikeouts.

The Breeze also scored its first run on a squeeze play when Veronica Ramos (Sylmar) slid past the Kaos catcher to break a scoreless tie in the sixth inning.

Russell struck out the side in the seventh after the Kaos threatened with runners on first and second and no outs.

Add 18-under: The 18-under Stealth defeated the Orland Park Sparks (Ill.) 4-0 as Erin Voeltz (Westlake) scattered two hits over seven innings. Stealth scored a run in each of the first four innings.

The Camarillo Riptides lost their opening-round game 3-2 to the Davey Power (Fla.).

No sympathy: The 16-under Panthers Gold didn't waste time making their presence felt at the national tournament in Marietta, Ga., as they mercy-ruled the St. Louis Sluggers 9-0 in six innings in an opening-round game. Elena Ferraro (Harvard-Westlake) tossed three scoreless innings.
