The Antelope Valley
 District 51 All-Star softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  team, Rutledge had just witnessed a 6-hour, 3-minute, 19-inning marathon in which his team emerged as champion of the Big League (18-under) Western Regional Softball Tournament.

The effort earned A.V. a berth in the World Series in Kalamazoo, Mich., for the second consecutive year.

So when his squad rushed the field to celebrate at Domenic Massari Park, Rutledge could only stand and shake his head.

``I'm still in shock,'' he said after the game.
