 SOCIETY CORPORATION STOCK BEGINS TRADING
 ON NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE
CLEVELAND, Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Society Corporation, an Ohio- based financial services company, today began trading its common stock on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).
Society's trading symbol on the Big Board is "SCY." Price and volume information will appear under the abbreviation "Society" in NYSE daily stock quotation listings published in newspapers and other periodicals. Following a meeting with NYSE officials in New York this morning, Robert W. Gillespie, Society chairman and chief executive officer, initiated the first trade of Society's common stock on the NYSE. Society had filed a formal application in August to list on the exchange.
"The size and scope of Society's appeal to the investment community made the shift to the New York Stock Exchange a logical step. Our stock listing will appear in more publications across the country, giving us increased visibility and an excellent opportunity to continue to expand our shareholder base," Gillespie said.
Gillespie said another factor in the decision was the stronger presence a NYSE listing gives a company in the international financial markets. "We are operating in a global economy and individuals and institutions from overseas are investing substantial resources in U.S. securities and, in many cases, give strong consideration to NYSE-listed companies in making their investment decisions," he said.
Society currently has approximately 58 million shares of common stock outstanding; these shares are owned by approximately 34,000 individuals and institutions. Gillespie said, "With daily trading volume for Society, under symbol 'SOCI,' on NASDAQ averaging around 200,000 shares and new shareholders joining us as a result of acquisitions, the time was appropriate to make the change."
Society Corporation is one of the largest bank holding companies in the Midwest with more than $23 billion in assets, $1.7 billion in equity capital, more than $3.3 billion in market capitalization and more than 450 banking and trust offices in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Texas, Florida, New York, Colorado and Missouri. Through its affiliates, Society engages in commercial banking, consumer banking, mortgage banking and leasing and investment management and trust services.
