SOCCER PREVIEW: CHAMPIONS HAVE `GROWING TO DO' CHAMINADE HAS SOME QUESTIONS.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

The players were so nervous, the coach was afraid they were going to throw up before taking the field last week. And that was just for a scrimmage.

The Chaminade of West Hills girls' soccer team is not the confident, experienced group that produced a fourth consecutive Southern Section championship last season, but don't be surprised if the Eagles are playing for another title in March.

``We're gonna gon·na

have our hands full in the preseason,'' Chaminade coach Mike Eavans said.

The Eagles have yet to have the entire team together for a practice, are uncertain about their goalkeeping and will likely start three freshmen, including two in a defense that is traditionally the team's strength.

``We've got a lot of growing to do as a team,'' Evans said. ``A lot of growing. But nevertheless, we've got some stars.''

Those stars include Washington-bound senior forward Kim Taylor, who is expected to join the Eagles this week after being at a national-team camp. Senior forward Tara Donoghue established the school scoring record last season when she had 22 goals and 12 assists. She will be counted on more if the defense anchored by senior sweeper Lauren Nussbaum is not as stingy stin·gy

 as in the past.

Winning a Mission League title requires overcoming rivals Harvard- Westlake of North Hollywood and Louisville of Woodland Hills, something even last season's Eagles struggled to do.

Defending league champion Harvard-Westlake suffered key losses of its own with the graduation Graduation is the action of receiving or conferring an academic degree or the associated ceremony.  Jamie Artsis and goalkeeper Dana Reyes joining a core of returnees led by Jill Oaks and Kim LeVere, the Wolverines should remain among the area's elite.

The addition of freshman Megan Merrit to a Louisville team that already had standout juniors Jenny Farenbaugh and Carri Schuler isn't any more encouraging for Chaminade.

As much as the Eagles would like to win league, they are downplaying what might happen during the regular season. As long as they reach the playoffs, they claim they will be satisfied, since the postseason is when they play their best. After all, Chaminade did not win the Mission title last season.

Nonleague games against highly competitive teams such as Westlake, Hart of Newhall, Canyon and Buena and playing in the Excalibur Tournament might not make for a pretty record but should help the Eagles in the long run.

``I know if we didn't have the schedule we have, the girls wouldn't get the pressure and experience they need,'' Evans said. ``It's tough, they'll lose some games. But like I tell them every year, it's not where you are at at the beginning of the year, it's where you're at at the end.''

A look at other local contenders:

Golden: Quartz Hill is the traditional league power and the Rebels established themselves as a legitimate threat outside the league as well last season when they upset Westlake in the playoffs for Quartz Hill's first berth in the quarterfinals. With All-Southern Section seniors Kellie Cox and Andrea Cabriales back, the Rebels shouldn't be taken lightly this season, either.

Lancaster's career scoring leader, Laci Fults, and a core of youngsters, including sophomore sweeper Julie Thomas, sophomore forward Stephanie Meek meek

and freshman Kathleen Prieto could make the Eagles the biggest obstacle in the way of Quartz Hill's sixth league title in seven years.

Foothill: Weaknesses are hard to find on a Hart team going for its seventh consecutive league title. Senior Mandy Mansfield provides an added scoring punch after missing last season with a knee injury. She joins seven returning starters, including Pepperdine-bound midfielder Ali Pavoni. The Indians' depth in goal got even deeper with the addition of freshman Melissa Deckers, the sister of Harvard-Westlake's former star.

However, Canyon and Valencia could challenge Hart for the title.

All-Southern Section junior midfielder Jaime Rendich, who had 13 goals and 25 assists last season, is one of Canyon's nine returning starters. The Cowboys cowboys, in American history.

have their top five scorers and entire defense back. Valencia also returns the majority of last season's young team that was aiming to simply build for the future but ended up as a league contender before finishing third.

Marmonte: Westlake has its third new coach in three years, but the Warriors are loaded with so many talented club players, it shouldn't matter who is at the helm as they go for their third consecutive Marmonte title and try to maintain their hold on the region's No. 1 ranking.

Frank Marino inherits a Westlake team that posted 18 shutouts and allowed a school-record low six goals last season. Sweeper Kristina Van Krog and midfielder Jenna Wirtz graduated, but Katie McCurdy is back to anchor the defense and senior Sara Silver-Hill is ready to lead the team in scoring for a third year in a row.

Agoura senior forward Heather Sims won't have Jennifer Graham to provide the other half of last season's one-two scoring punch, but Sims is surrounded by a solid supporting cast that should keep the Chargers the top threat to Westlake.
