SOCCER PLAYOFFS: DEFENSE LIKELY TO PUSH TEAMS THROUGH PLAYOFFS : PIONEERS SET TO HOST RIO MESA.

Byline: Heather Gripp Daily News Staff Writer

The Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  girls' soccer team found the perfect solution for a lagging Lagging

 offense: defense.

The Pioneers have prided themselves on solid defense in recent years, but the backfield became even more important this season when it became clear there wouldn't be an abundance of goals to recover from deficits.

Junior Jennifer Peterson is among those routinely turning away would-be scorers and giving the Pioneers hopes of advancing deep in playoffs. In her first full year on varsity, the outside midfielder has done more than fill the void left by the graduation of last season's All-League defender Emily Swanson.

``Losing Emily last year, we were like, `Oh man,' '' said senior sweeper Cindy Mallett, a two-time Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. ``She's fast. She doesn't give up even when she gets hurt. You always get hurt back there, but she doesn't show it, she just always keeps going.''

The Pioneers hope they keep on going, too. After dropping to fourth in the first half of Marmonte League play, the defending league champs went undefeated in the second half. Simi Valley is the only team to beat league champion Westlake, the No. 1 team in Division II. The Pioneers moved into second place by beating Agoura on the last day of the season. They open the playoffs Friday at home against Rio Mesa.

``Jennifer Peterson has helped us out a lot this year,'' midfielder Mindy Gondrez said. ``She's tough. She stops anyone. She's stopped the best players. She doesn't get a lot of the credit, but she's really important.''

Peterson, 16, was expected to start last season, but had to sit out when she was declared academically ineligible in·el·i·gi·ble

``We were strong back there (last season), but we would have been much stronger with Jennifer back there,'' Simi Valley coach Mark Johnson Mark Johnson may refer to: Academics and scientists

``She's done a heck of a job marking the best strikers. We've put Jennifer on the best striker you have and she shuts them down. Without her, we wouldn't have won the last six straight.''

Mallett often moves up to help the offense and fullback Sara Jenke is used a lot on set plays such as free kicks, but Peterson's speed and ability to anticipate where opponents are going make the Pioneer defense tough throughout the game.

A goal by Westlake is the only goal scored from Peterson's side of the field this season.

``I like it when other people are trying to get past you and you stop them,'' Peterson said. ``I like the thrill of taking it from them.

``We sort of hold the team together. We're the strength of the team; it works from the back up.''
