SOCCER NOTEBOOK: KNIGHTS WON'T PLAY IN REGIONALS.

Byline: Erik Boal

Special to the Daily News

Although the Desert Christian of Lancaster girls' soccer team secured a berth in the inaugural Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  regional tournament by virtue of its 2-0 semifinal victory Tuesday at Viewpoint of Calabasas, Knights head coach Deann Lewis confirmed Thursday that Saturday's Southern Section Div. VI championship match will be the team's final contest this season.

With the team's focus centering on repeating as Div. VI champion, the opportunity to compete in the eight-team tournament next week wasn't addressed with Lewis and her husband Curtis -- Desert Christian's assistant -- until after they had made family vacation plans.

As a result, Desert Christian athletic director Athletic director (commonly, "athletics director") is a position at many American colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, which oversees the work of the coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic  Dean Spoelstra informed Southern Section officials Thursday that the Knights -- despite their 44-match unbeaten streak -- wouldn't be competing Tuesday in the opening round of regional competition.

"(Senior forward Robyn Estrada) said 'If we couldn't do it all together 100 percent, then we didn't want to do it,'" Deann Lewis said. "It would've been a great honor, but there was just too many factors. And this way, the seniors know for sure that Saturday will be their last game, and they don't have to wonder about next week."

Top-seed Desert Christian (25-0-1) faces No. 2 Calvary Chapel Calvary Chapel is a non-denominational, Protestant fellowship of churches which began in 1965 in Southern California. The Knights also recorded a 4-0 victory over Calvary Chapel in last year's semifinals, before tying Ontario Christian 1-1 in the final.

"(St. Margaret's coach) Johnny Marmelstein sent out an e-mail that said 'The road to a championship goes through Lancaster,'" Deann Lewis said. "I prefer to be the underdog or underrated, but sometimes it doesn't happen that way. We just need to focus on what we have ahead of us, and that's Calvary Chapel.

"We've played each other enough that we know them and they know us, we just need to go out and play like it's our last game and not hold anything back."

No tie zone for Oaks Christian

Oaks Christian of Westlake Village is making its fifth appearance in six years in a girls' soccer final, but the Lions are still seeking their first outright title.

Oaks Christian (20-3-2), which plays Downey (20-4-1) at 4 p.m. Saturday at Warren High, played Valley Christian of Cerritos to a scoreless draw last year. It marked the second time the Lions tied Valley Christian in the division final, including a 2-2 deadlock See deadly embrace.

"The seniors definitely want to win. They don't want to tie," Oaks Christian coach Jan Hethcock said. "But they know that Saturday is just a game, and in the big picture, it's just a small part of their life. It's just an honor to play in the final again, and it's a great thing for our school to have both our boys' and girls' teams there."
