SOCCER NOTEBOOK: FOOTHILL SOCCER GETTING KICKS.Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer They won't start playing each other for about a month, but based on early games the Foothill League looks to be competitive this season. Two Foothill League teams, Canyon and Saugus, made it to the quarterfinals of the 10th annual Burroughs tournament, which fielded many of the top teams from the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. Canyon is defending Foothill League champion and Hart, which finished second last year, won back to back in 1998-99 and 1999-2000. But Saugus and Valencia figure to join the hunt this season. Saugus lost to Westlake in the semifinals of the Burroughs tournament on penalty kicks. The Centurions took fourth place in the tournament. Canyon, a quarterfinal loser, didn't place. The Centurions appear to be ready to challenge Canyon for the Foothill League title. No one knows better than Quartz Hill and coach Andre Matalon. The Rebels, who figure to run away with the Golden League title, have played and beaten Canyon, Hart and Saugus in their first three games. --Seeing red: Quartz Hill forward Nick Angelillo had a rough transition from club to high school soccer. The Rebels' leading scorer in 2000 with 18 goals, Angelillo came out playing the more aggressive club-style soccer against Hart, hitting a goalie too hard and making an illegal tackle that drew two yellow cards, which equals a red card, ejection and disqualification from the next game. Angelillo sat out the game against Canyon, though Quartz Hill won without him. ``I came from a club tournament and think maybe I didn't play under control enough,'' Angelillo said. Matalon wants a better example from one of his team captains. ``I told him captains don't get red cards,'' Matalon said. ``Nick's a wonderful player with unbelievable skills but he's a hot head sometimes and he needs to control that.'' |
