A homemaker and mother of four players, Genovese is teaming up with her husband and a friend to build the first stadium for arena soccer in Ventura County. The partners hope to break ground in January on an enclosed, open-air stadium in what is now a sloping, weed-covered lot on Camarillo Springs Road.

Genovese and her husband, Steven, a captain in the Los Angeles County Fire Department Not to be confused with Los Angeles Fire Department.

Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  to pay for the project. They are taking the risk, she said, simply because they believe in a game that wins converts with the swiftness of a Pele penalty kick.

``It's really an intense game - it never stops,'' she said. ``It's unreal how fast it goes. Everybody I know who plays thinks it's the greatest thing since buttered toast.''

Arena soccer differs in dimension and speed from the original. The surface is covered in artificial turf Artificial turf, or synthetic turf, is a grass-like man-made surface manufactured from synthetic materials. It is most often used in arenas for sports that were originally or are normally played on grass, however, it is now being used on residential lawns and commercial  and surrounded by a 20-foot-high border of plywood, plexiglass and netting. The field is shorter, the teams are smaller, the scores are higher.

counties, the closest stadium is the Santa Clarita Soccer Center, which signed up 3,800 members in its first 18 months in operation. More than 100 adult teams play at the center, while 56 teams of young players are scheduled to begin their first season in January.

Manager John Burnham John Burnham (June 6, 1839 — April 20, 1914) was an English cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman who played for Derbyshire between 1871 and 1876. Burnham took part in Derbyshire's first-ever match as a county side, an innings victory over Lancashire, and four further  said he's not surprised that the sport is spreading.

``It's a very easy game for people who haven't played soccer before and it's really fun for people used to the regular game,'' he said. ``The advantage is that it's much quicker and each player has many more touches on the ball.''

The Ventura County stadium, scheduled for a March opening, was approved by the Camarillo Planning Commission Noun 1. planning commission - a commission delegated to propose plans for future activities and developments

on Tuesday. City officials say the design ensures the stadium will not bother neighbors, said Tony Boden, Camarillo's director of planning and community development.

``There are a few neighbors who want to know what it is, but those are the only real comments we've heard,'' he said. ``It shouldn't be a problem.''

If the stadium does well, Genovese said the backers plan to build one in Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. . With more than 200 active soccer teams, ranging from squads of 6-year-olds to teams of competitive adults, Simi Valley is an eager market, said Simi Valley Soccer Foundation President Dan Gessel.

``Right now young players are trekking out to Santa Clarita at all hours and they're loving it,'' he said. ``I've gotten rave reviews.''

Gessel credits the popularity of the sport to its high speed and high scores.

``People love goals and touchdowns and points and scoring,'' he said. ``That's what the sport is all about.''
