SOCCER FANS SHOW THEIR COLORS : 94,000 PACK ROSE BOWL FOR U.S. CUP.

They came ready to watch soccer, but they dressed with another purpose: to let fellow fans know just which side they were on.

Donning flags, wigs, capes and painted faces, 94,000 soccer enthusiasts with their allegiance on brilliant display crammed into the Rose Bowl on Sunday for the championship game of the U.S. Cup '96 in which Mexico and the United States Relations between the United States and Mexico are among the most important and complex that each nation maintains. They are shaped by a mixture of mutual interests, shared problems, and growing interdependence.  battled to a 2-2 draw.

``They haven't had this big of a crowd for years. This bowl is just filled with energy,'' said John King of Westlake Village, who came to see the matches with his soccer-loving 9-year-old son, Cameron.

``Soccer is very competitive. That's why I like it,'' said Cameron, who wore a Galaxy team jersey.

Team and country colors were emblazoned on hats, jerseys, T-shirts, jackets and even baby clothing.

``We're very supportive of our team,'' said Maytal Shvartz, a 13-year-old Woodland Hills Galaxy fan. Maytal attended Sunday's doubleheader with her entire girls' soccer team, the Valley United Earthquakes.

The pitcher is credited with starting the game if he is listed in the starting lineup as the team's pitcher, even if he does not throw the first pitch to the , the girls sat on the hot pavement outside the Rose Bowl painting each others' faces in Galaxy colors. The girls also wore multicolored wigs.

``People are very into soccer,'' Maytal said philosophically. ``We like it so much, we all plan on playing soccer in college.''

David Canizales fended off friends during a pregame barbecue as they tried to convince him to switch his allegiance from the U.S. to Mexico before it was too late.

Canizales and his friends had a reasoned and occasionally passionate debate about the Mexican and American soccer teams before the games started.

``Everyone in this group is rooting for Mexico except for this one guy,'' said Canizales' friend Danny Garza, who yelled, ``Go Mexico

'' before finishing his sentence.

Jose Triana came to Sunday's match ready to root for his home team, Mexico. Triana showed up wearing a Mexican flag on his head and another wrapped around his shoulders like a cape.

``When the USA plays another country, I root for the USA, but when they're up against Mexico, there's no choice for me,'' said Triana, who has lived in Azusa for the past 14 years. ``I root for Mexico. It's my country.''
