GIRLS: WHO'S HOT

Sarina Coutin, Hart: Scored four goals with two assists in Monday's pool-play victories over Granada Hills and Rosamond in the Hart of Newhall tournament, increasing her team-leading totals to 11 goals and seven assists. No Indians scored or assisted on as many goals last season. She has scored in all nine games she's played.

--Sahar Haghdan and Diana Mendez, Highland: The seniors are among the region's most unselfish players, combining for eight goals and 15 assists for Highland of Palmdale (8-1-1). Mendez scored a goal with four assists and Haghdan added two goals and an assist in the Bulldogs' two shutout victories Monday in the Lancaster tournament as they advanced to the semifinals for the second year in a row.

--Louisville: With the second and third days of the Hart tournament postponed until Jan. 15 and 17, the Royals (8-2-2) will enter their Jan. 5 Mission League opener at Harvard-Westlake of Studio City riding a streak of three shutouts. Louisville, which has shut out a region-leading eight opponents, has surrendered goals to only three teams: Buena of Ventura, La Salle La Salle, city (1990 pop. 9,717), La Salle co., N Ill., on the Illinois River; settled 1830, inc. 1852. --Crescenta Valley: The Falcons' season appeared to be going nowhere fast after they lost five games in an eight-day stretch. But Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. THEY'RE FOR REAL

of Woodland Hills' high standards, a 4-3 start might be considered a disappointment.

But coach Shanna Sarris knows the Conquistadores' run at a fifth consecutive City Section title isn't in jeopardy jeopardy, in law, condition of a person charged with a crime and thus in danger of punishment. At common law a defendant could be exposed to jeopardy for the same offense only once; exposing a person twice is known as

El Camino Real lost 1-0 to Mater Dei, defeated Long Beach Wilson 2-0, and fell to San Clemente San Clemente (săn klĭmĕn`tē), city (1990 pop. 41,100), Orange co., S Calif., on the Pacific coast; inc. 1928. I quarterfinals last season, and San Clemente shared the Div. I title with Capistrano Valley.

``We haven't had four goals scored on us in a long time,'' Sarris said of San Clemente, which won the tournament. ``Those were really tough teams, but with the exception of the San Clemente game, we held our own.

``All the coaches that saw us play told me that we had a tremendous team and that they were glad we came.''

El Camino Real defeated Alemany of Mission Hills and Hoover of Glendale in pool-play competition Monday at the Hart of Newhall tournament and anticipated playing at least two more Southern Section opponents Tuesday before rain canceled play.

The good news for the Conquistadores is their final pool-play game with Crescenta Valley of La Crescenta has been rescheduled for Jan. 15. A victory would send them to a semifinal meeting with Canyon of Canyon Country later in the day.

El Camino Real also has a nonleague game at Oaks Christian of Westlake Village on Feb. 7.

SPEED THRILLS

Track season doesn't start until late February, but Oaks Christian of Westlake Village could have some potential sprint or relay candidates on its soccer roster.

Jan Hethcock, a 31-year coaching veteran, often sits back and marvels at the open-field speed of Whitney Acton, Brianna Cox, Caitlyn MacKechnie, Hannah MacKechnie, Kelsea Smith and Nicole Sweetman, who are consistently rotated rotated

``I'm blessed that I'm their soccer coach,'' Hethcock said. ``I can't ever remember another time in my life where I've had this much speed on one team. They're so much fun to watch.''

SAME SEASON, DIFFERENT STORY

Taft of Woodland Hills long has been a boys' basketball power, in the West Valley League and the region. In girls' soccer, the Toreadors have taken a back seat to four-time defending City Section champion El Camino Real of Woodland Hills, Chatsworth and Granada Hills during their seven-year existence.

Third-year coach Greg Venger hopes that trend will change this season.

Taft is off to its best start in the program history, boasting a region-best 12-1-1 record following a split of its pool-play games Tuesday at the El Dorado El Dorado, legendary country of South America

In Venger's first two seasons, the Toreadors were 25-25-3, 4-12-4 in league play, and didn't beat El Camino Real, Chatsworth or Granada Hills. After winning the Sylmar tournament for the second year in a row, and playing a nonleague schedule featuring 11 teams that qualified for last season's City playoffs, Venger says his team is ready to move into the league's upper half.

``This has to be (the year),'' said Venger, who has seen the number of club players on his roster increase from three to 13 during his tenure. ``We've turned the corner and now these teams realize we can play.''

In addition to returning All-City selection Loren Schofield - who leads the region with 19 goals - Taft also has relied heavily on the efforts of senior midfielder

Hannah Sasson (11 goals and 20 assists), a four-year varsity player.

``She's been overlooked for three years,'' Venger said. ``There's not too many in the City Section that are better than her.''

The Toreadors have also benefited from the presence of three freshmen, most notably Lauren Yoshizuka, who has eight goals and 12 assists.

The Knights used a 4-3 victory over Gaither of Tampa - one of the top teams in Florida - to win the prestigious national tournament. St. Francis started playing the type of soccer coach Glen Appels believes the team is capable of in its semifinal victory over Seminole of Sanford, Fla.

``We didn't play well in group play, but we had a terrific semifinal against a really talented team,'' Appels said. ``We proved to ourselves what we're capable of as a team. We played much better teams and won.''

The Knights were disappointed after a loss to Sylmar in theconsolation game of the Burroughs of Burbank tournament, which ended two weeksago. St. Francis was still experimenting with combinations and filling roster spots during the Burroughs tournament. The school's football teamcommandeered resources field/players at the start of soccer season.

``We had some things working against us,'' Appels said. ``Our football team had a long season and we're happy for them ... but I think we're progressing. You usually don't play your best soccer at the start of the season.''
