SOCCER BEAT RELOADED.

When the Calabasas boys opened the season 1-3-1, the Coyotes' worst fears about having to replace several key members from last year's Division III

However, players such as sophomore Alex Rosenbloom have Calabasas back in winning form. Rosenbloom took pressure off junior forward Danny Barth by scoring a team-high 21 goals. The Coyotes (14-5-4) head into next week's playoffs as the Frontier League's second-place team but are encouraged by having lost just twice since the three consecutive losses at the start of the season. During that stretch, they earned victories over such highly-regarded teams as Crespi of Encino and Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. ``This year, it's every bit as satisfying,'' said Reich, who has accumulated 331 wins since the program's inaugural season in 1977-78. ``The challenges have just been different. Last year, it was more the challenge of . . . challenging them to play to their potential. This year, it's been more about strategy.''

Jenna Ainsworth, Caity Stevens, Katie McCurdy and (if healthy) Sara Silver-Hill need to step up if the Marmonte League-champion Warriors want to hang around a little longer this year. Quartz Hill upset the Warriors in the second round last season.

``I want to see this senior class get us there,'' Warriors coach Frank Marino said. ``They're going to carry us. And if we do make it, we need them to get us there. I have faith.''

CORNER KICKS

The Calabasas boys are not just full of good players; the Coyotes also are good sports. They have not had a player ejected from a game in more than two years. Wednesday's regular-season finale marked Calabasas' 47th game without a red card or double yellow cards.

``I'm really proud of that,'' Coyotes coach John Reich said. . . .

CONSISTENCY FACTOR

Valencia senior Kim Wood has scored only one goal this season. But it was significant: It gave the Vikings' girls a 1-0 victory over Foothill League rival Saugus.

That's what carried the Vikings to their first league championship - small contributions from everyone on the field.

The Vikings don't have the individual talent of league counterparts Hart (Ali Pavoni) and Canyon (Jamie Rendich). Instead, Valencia relies on its defense and an opportunistic opportunistic /op·por·tu·nis·tic/ (op?er-tldbomacn-is´tik)

``What it's come down to for us is consistency,'' Vikings coach Tony Scalercio said. ``When everything's said and done, it's those little things, little details that you pay attention to, that end up making you a championship team.

``We did what was necessary in every game that mattered to us.''

POETRY IN MOTION

It wasn't exactly Walt Whitman-like, but the Chaminade of West Hills girls used the written verse to psyche Psyche (sī`kē), in Greek mythology, personification of the human soul. One such verse went: ``We play Harvard-Westlake today, so it's finally time for them to pay.''

On cue, the Eagles played like Keats in cleats to beat the Wolverines 2-1, putting Chaminade in position to claim the Mission League title.

The teams meet again this afternoon at Harvard-Westlake, which needs a victory to share the league championship with Chaminade.

The Eagles are peaking in February, which is hardly new considering what they've accomplished the last four Marches: They've won four consecutive Southern Section championships.

``Even though we've had injuries and setbacks, we're one team,'' senior defender Lauren Nussbaum said. ``They're my best friends.''

RECORD WATCH

Newbury Park junior Jon Krupansky scored twice in Tuesday's victory to surpass Brian Collins' school single-season record of 29 goals.

But Krupansky is not the only local player trying to rewrite record books this season.

Among others is Reseda junior Willie Sims Willie Sims (born January 18, 1984 in Guatemala City) is a Guatemalan-born soccer player, who currently plays forward for the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer. He was drafted in the 2nd round (23rd overall) of the 2006 MLS SuperDraft. , who surpassed the Regents' old record of 26 a few weeks ago.

hoped to break his school's mark, but fell short. Lopez appeared on track to threaten Nate Write Jr.'s record of 30 by scoring 14 goals during nonleague play. However, a scoring drought during the first half of league left him at just 22 goals despite netting four Monday. He ranks third on the Centurions' list.

BOYS: SEVEN-DAY FORECAST

Game of the week

Crespi at Notre Dame, today, 5 p.m. The league race is so tight that the winner could earn a piece of the title while the loser might not even make the playoffs. The Celts of Encino knocked Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks out of first place last Friday with a 3-2 victory in overtime. Like the league race, this game probably will come down to the wire, too.

Last Friday, Harvard-Westlake of Studio City dominated the first half and held a 1-0 lead. However, the Wolverines were stagnant the rest of the way and Chaminade of West Hills scored twice in the second half to win 2-1. The Eagles can wrap up the league title today with a victory or tie.

Bound to happen

El Camino Real of Woodland Hills gets the No. 1 seed when the City Section pairings are announced Tuesday. West Valley League rival Chatsworth will get another shot at the Conquistadores sometime in the playoffs.
