SOCCER BEAT BOYS SPOILERS DISRUPT STANDINGS.

Two unexpected teams played key roles in deciding first place in two of the area's most prominent leagues with upsets in their final games of the regular season.

Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  of Sherman Oaks, the fifth-place team in the Mission League, shocked first-place Loyola of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  on Wednesday to give St. Francis of La Canada the title.  to be the league's top team, and was seeded No. 1 in Southern Section Div. II, which appeared to be Royal's spot before the upset.

The importance of the Westlake-Royal game was seen in the stands, where the Thousand Oaks team was located cheering on Westlake and the entire Calabasas team was rooting for Royal. It was the only league game going because it was a rain makeup and the other teams had completed their schedules Wednesday.

``It was really fun,'' Westlake coach Bill Propster said. ``The last 20 minutes, everyone was cheering. It was the most people we've had at a game this year.''

Westlake's victory gave it third place over Calabasas, though both teams made the playoffs.

Notre Dame had lost three in a row and was struggling without injured starters Mike Getzer, Zach Migdol and Adam Stark. It seemed to have no hope against a Loyola team that had beaten St. Francis in overtime last week.

But the Knights won 2-0 with a team filled with junior varsity junior varsity

``We were surprised, but obviously very happy,'' St. Francis coach Glen Appels said. ``They were celebrating at our place, and it looked like it was co-champions at best for us. You can't usually count on Loyola having a bad day. But it turns out anything can happen.''

It's the highest the team has been seeded since seven years ago when it was sixth. SOCES plays host to No. 24 Hamilton on Thursday. ``We're really happy to be ninth,'' coach Mark Sobel said. ``We'll try to justify the seeding committee's high regard for us.''

--Foothill: A game after its streak of shutouts in the first eight league games ended against Saugus, Hart of Newhall's bid for a perfect league record was spoiled with a 1-1 tie with Valencia. But Hart's Devin Del Do did score two goals in the final two games to break his own school record with 22 for of the season. Hart will host San Marcos San Marcos (săn mär`kəs).

--Marmonte: Calabasas certainly failed to come up on top in Westlake's upset of Royal of Simi Valley. That made Calabasas, which has been ranked in the top 10 by the Daily News all season and has victories over Thousand Oaks and St. Francis of La Canada, an at-large team. As such, Calabasas drew a tough first-round game Friday at second-seed Santa Barbara. Top-seeded Thousand Oaks will host Leuzinger of Lawndale. Third-seeded Royal will host Peninsula of Palos Verdes Palos Verdes is often used to refer to a group of coastal cities on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in the Los Angeles/South Bay area of California. --Sunset Six: Canoga Park got its first No. 1 seed in the City Section playoffs to go along with its first league title. Coach Jake Gwin set the league title as his goal before the season, even writing it on newspaper questionnaires, despite the team going 1-11-1 with only a forfeit victory last season. Gwin's new goal is to reach the semifinals. Canoga Park sweeper Marvin Ramos tore his hamstring two weeks ago and is doubtful for the first-round game against No. 32 Venice on Thursday. In other action Thursday, No. 12 Grant of Van Nuys hosts No. 21 Gardena, No. 17 Poly of Sun Valley travels to No. 16 Jefferson and No. 25 Monroe of North Hills visits No. 8 Fairfax.

--Valley Mission: Sylmar was seeded No. 2 in the City Section playoffs but the Spartans could make a good argument for the top spot. Sylmar has the most impressive nonleague resume of any City team, giving Royal of Simi Valley and Birmingham of Lake Balboa one of each teams' two losses, and beating the fifth-ranked team in the state of Florida. Sylmar had two bad weeks that hurt them, one in the Sylmar tournament just after returning from Florida and another in league play when it tied Reseda and lost to Van Nuys. Sylmar hosts No. 31 Foshay of Los Angeles on Thursday. No. 13 Reseda hosts No. 20 Manual Arts and No. 18 San Fernando travels to No. 15 Cleveland of Reseda.

GIRLS

ON A MISSION

The Oaks Christian of Westlake Village girls' soccer team is 65-13-9 since the school opened four years ago and last season won a share of the Southern Section Div. V title.

But the Lions, seeded second in the Div. V playoffs that begin Saturday, are building a legacy on more than just winning, one that's consistent with the school's mission.

``Every time we step on the field it's 'What do we want to do as a team?' '' coach Jan Hethcock said. ``Everybody is out to beat us. Are we going to play to that or play to complement each other?''

Said senior and leading scorer Alysha Hoven: ``We started off with freshmen and sophomores. Most kids never played soccer before. We had only two club players. ... But coach Hethcock makes the best of a situation. He is a great leader and good players are attracted to the program.''

Hoven has scored 124 goals in four years and in the fall will play for the University of Pennsylvania (body, education) University of Pennsylvania - The home of ENIAC and Machiavelli.

``You can't control how other people think,'' junior striker Caitlyn MacKechnie said.

Instead, the Lions (15-2-4) will concentrate on returning to the Div. V championship game, in which they tied rival Oak Park last season. With Hoven, MacKechnie and other skilled players such as Nicole Sweetman, Brianna Cox and Tiffany Day, Oaks Christian has few weaknesses.

``I want to win,'' Hoven said. ``It doesn't matter to me if I score or if it's someone else.''

WHO'S HOT

--Meagan Pickett, Louisville: The Royals' defender scored two goals in the regular-season finale, a 2-0 victory over Chaminade of West Hills. The game was a must-win for Louisville of Woodland Hills (12-7-5), which earned the league's second playoff spot and will play at North Torrance on Saturday.

--Sammy Stoll, Oak Park: The striker has been making up for lost time. Injured last season, Stoll has become one of Oak Park's top scorers. She had three goals in an 8-0 victory over Bishop Diego of Santa Barbara on Wednesday and two in the Eagles' league finale, a 4-0 victory over St. Bonaventure of Ventura on Friday.

Oak Park (13-7-4, 8-0-2) took the Tri-Valley league's first playoff spot and will host Santa Paula Santa Paula (săn`tə pôl`ə), city (1990 pop. 25,062), Ventura co., S Calif., on the Santa Clara River in a fertile valley that yields citrus fruits, avocados, vegetables, flowers, nursery products, and walnuts; laid out 1875, inc.  on Saturday at 3 p.m.
