SOCCER BEAT : SCORING HAS BEEN JUST RIGAMATIC.

Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest.  forward Stephanie Rigamat scored 42 goals this season, more than any other player, boy or girl. It helped her earn a scholarship to UC Irvine. Last year, she scored 39 goals.

It didn't matter if the Falcons were playing top teams or bad teams. Or if she was marked by one or two defenders. Rigamat scored. The Falcons host Hart in Saturday's Southern Section Division I first-round playoff match at 3 p.m.

Typically, a midfielder would pass the ball to an open space on the outside, and Rigamat would use her speed to reach the ball before the defense.

After that, ``I usually try to keep it close (to the body) and cut to the middle,'' she said. ``The goalie usually comes out. When she goes for the slide, I go around her.''

Spartans close gate on their goal

Throughout the season, La Canada boys' coach Louie Bilowitz has said his team isn't that good. The team scored just 45 goals - 100 fewer than this time last year - while starting four freshmen and three sophomores.

But the team finished 15-1-3 and won a share of the Rio Hondo Rio Hondo may refer to:

``They didn't know they weren't supposed to win,'' he said. ``It's a major surprise to me and it's a major credit to them.''

The key was defense, where senior goalie Matt Cardis and seniors Kevin Neumeier and Ryan Zimmerman held all opponents to just 13 goals this season. Meanwhile, forward Bryan Jackson scored 13 and midfielder Chris Cuellar added eight goals and 11 assists.

``It was rewarding for our team to end up as league champs,'' said Cardis, who likely will be a league Most Valuable Player. ``We should have lost. We were down the whole game.''
