SOCCER BEAT : BIRMINGHAM'S BIG PROBLEM.

Byline: - Patrick Hipes, Lee Barnathan

There's a problem with the Birmingham High boys' soccer team, but any coach with the woes of the Braves' Jose Freire should be so lucky.

Two quality goalkeepers. Only one goal to defend.

There is aptly named sophomore John Wall, one of the area's top goalies and a member of the under-17 U.S National Team pool. Acrobatic, thick and fearless, he is considered a star already.

But Freire also has senior Adrian Contreras, a lanky lank·y

scored on Wall in a 1-0 upset victory Wednesday, handing the 10-1 Braves their first loss.

``The next game, I will have the other goalie go,'' Freire said. ``(Adrian) is a senior and I have to give him a chance.''

It's a testament to both keepers that they accept their roles.

``I understand,'' Contreras said. ``I want to play all the time, but it's not possible. You've just got to wait for your time.''

El confuso

It should be called the El Nino rule.

At least three times this season rain halted matches at halftime. Typically, area matches either aren't started because of the rain or are played in their entirety. The question raised is what to do if the weather grows worse as the match progresses.

The National Federation of High School Athletics rule book says a match is official if only one half is played. As a result, Royal's boys beat Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. The No. 8 Lancers have used strong defensive play and a talented midfield to win - along with a bit of luck. They beat preseason No. 1 Simi Valley 1-0 in overtime Monday, the fourth league match T.O. has needed OT to solve. The one draw came at home against Royal.

``We're happy we're doing well,'' Tietjen said. ``We've had a couple breaks, too.''

semifinal. This year, the Wolverines are 3-6-1 after Alemany beat them Wednesday.

Coach Ned Smith, who has never had a team start this poorly in his five seasons, places the blame on a combination of key personnel losses and a tough preseason schedule.

The Brazilian connection: Montclair Prep has only 200 students enrolled, but the important thing for the boys' soccer team is that two of them are Brazilian.

This fall, junior forward Antonio Alves and junior midfielder Octavio Felinto came to town, and it has been nothing but good news for the Mounties.

``I personally think it's been real exciting playing with them,'' said forward Noah Rosenblum, who has 14 goals in seven games. ``You don't have to think as much because they are always there.''

Falcons facts: In the six-plus years Crescenta Valley's girls have fielded a team, it has a record of 39-4-3 in the Pacific League. The Falcons have outscored the other league teams by a 318-15 count with 37 shutouts. No team other than Arcadia has ever scored a goal on them until Tuesday, when Muir scored in a 5-1 victory.
