SOCCER BEAT: WINS WHEN THEY MATTER : OAK PARK JELLS IN LEAGUE PLAY.

Byline: Heather Gripp and Jim Inghram Daily News Staff Writers

The Oak Park girls are winning when it counts. The Eagles went 4-9 during the preseason but have lost just one game since.

``We enter the biggest tournament we can find and play the big teams,'' Oak Park coach Ted Eggleston said. ``And we have a young team. It just took us a little while to get going.

``The purpose of the preseason is to play the toughest teams we can find to prepare us for league and the postseason. It hurts our record, but we don't care

The Eagles (8-10, 4-1) suffered their first Tri-Valley League loss Wednesday when they couldn't come back from an early 2-0 deficit against St. Bonaventure, last year's Southern Section Division IV co-champion. Rebecca Carroll scored her team-high 17th goal of the season for Oak Park's lone goal.

Freshman Liz Young is showing the Eagles they shouldn't have anything to worry about in goal for at least three more years.

``She's going to be so good,'' Eggleston said of Young.

Team play: The Calabasas girls lack the go-to player they've had in recent years, and coach Melisa Danio da·ni·o

``With our girls it hasn't been just one girl,'' Danio said. ``It's spread out so that helps. They can't just say mark this girl. Some teams you can do that. That's kind of the fun thing, you never know who's going to score. It's exciting.''

Lana Fogel leads Calabasas (7-3-3) with six goals. Six other Coyotes have four goals.

``That's the best part about it,'' Danio said. ``It hasn't been one girl's job to score all the goals and feel all the pressure.''

When Calabasas faces Malibu today, it expects a tougher game than time than the previous meeting when the Sharks Sharks may refer to:

Streak on line Agoura has the best chance of ending the Westlake girls' perfect league season when the Chargers host the Warriors today. Agoura's only league loss came in its previous matchup with Westlake.

Still rolling: It's getting deeper and deeper into league play and Newbury Park keeps right on winning.

The Panthers are 5-0-3 in the Marmonte League after Wednesday's 1-0 victory over Agoura. Casey Schmidt scored the teams' only goal and his 12th. Schmidt, who is one of the region's top forward's, scored three times in a 4-2 victory over Westlake in the Panthers' previous game.

The Panthers' victory coupled with Thousand Oaks' win over Westlake sets up a terrific game today at Newbury Park.
