SOCCER BEAT: SIMI VALLEY SOLVES WESTLAKE MYSTERY.

The streak is over. Michelle Thoutte's throw-in set up a goal and the Simi Valley defense took care of the rest. The Pioneers became the first team to beat the Westlake girls in league with a 1-0 win Wednesday.

``I said it all year, we're the only team that can beat Westlake,'' Simi Valley coach Mark Johnson said. The Pioneers also beat Westlake (15-1-1, 9-1-0) in the final of December's Simi Valley tournament. The teams played to a scoreless tie, but Simi Valley won on penalty kicks to provide the only other blemish on the record of the No. 1 team in Division II. The Warriors defeated Simi Valley in the first round of Marmonte League play.

``I still think Westlake has one of the most skilled teams in girls' soccer,'' Johnson said. ``You look at every position and there's extremely skilled players, but they have weaknesses that can be exploited on set plays.''

It was such a play that led to the Pioneers' goal. Allison Cameron took Thoutte's throw and and turned it into a goal in the 39th minute.

``That worked exactly the way we practiced it all week,'' said Johnson, whose team has played well defensively all season but struggled to produce offensively.

Scoring will be even harder to come by today. Forward Valorie Anunziatta is going to Idaho for a college interview and will miss Simi Valley's game against Thousand Oaks.

The Pioneers (12-7-1, 6-3) passed Royal and moved into third place with last week's win against the Highlanders and are hoping to catch second-place Agoura. Simi Valley plays the Chargers next week in the league finale.

Champs: The Camarillo girls officially clinched the inaugural Pacific View League title when the Scorpions beat Oxnard 5-3 on Tuesday. Camarillo, which didn't make the playoffs last year, improved to 14-3 and 9-0 in league.

Another day, another injury: Healthy players are scarce at La Reina. A rash of injuries in the past three weeks left the Regents without leading scorer Monica Thompson, Karina Garcia, Brenna Scanlon and Christina Miller.

Thompson has a severely sprained right ankle and is questionable for today's game against first-place St. Bonaventure. Garcia tore a ligament in her right ankle and Miller suffered a torn ACL. Scanlon tore a ligament in her elbow during a fall and is expected back soon. Others such as sweeper Kimberly Albert are hurt, but playing since La Reina is running out of players.

The Regents have 11 players left, but coach Joe Laraneta said he might only start 10 and see that number reduce during the game.

``I'm beginning to put together a scrapbook that looks more like a medic's book,'' Laraneta said.

The lineup that remains has been shuffled, with Christina Werner's move to goal being the most notable. The sophomore has less than a week's experience at the position. However, injuries haven't affected La Reina's outlook as it clings to third place in the Tri-Valley League.

``They're so young they don't know what's going on,'' Laraneta said, ``and I'm not going to tell them. As long as they keep a healthy attitude and are having fun, they'll be OK.''
