SOCCER BEAT: NO LONGER A FOOT SHORT : VALENTINO'S MOVE TO FORWARD HELPS PALMDALE.

The Falcons aren't exactly the area's most prolific goal-scoring unit, using ball control and opportunistic opportunistic /op·por·tu·nis·tic/ (op?er-tldbomacn-is´tik)

His name is Anthony Valentino, a junior who spent 1996 and the early portion of this season as a defender.

The Falcons, top heavy in the back row, tried several different combinations at forward, including their best player, sweeper Kim Britton.

That didn't work, and Palmdale coach Claudia Cline cline, in biology, any gradual change in a particular characteristic of a population of organisms from one end of the geographical range of the population to the other.  turned to a rather lofty toe in Valentino, who served as the kicker Kicker

on the school's league-championship football team.

``I took advantage of that big foot of his,'' Cline said of Valentino, whose soccer career had almost exclusively placed him in a defensive role.

``It's different,'' Valentino said. ``When I played in the back the ball was in front of me. Now I'm turning around for it. The instincts have to change.''

Valentino already made an impact for the Falcons, who won the tournament two years after they lost in the championship to Cleveland. He scored twice in the tournament, both in a 3-0 win over Saugus.

``We have a different philosophy than we did before the tournament,'' Cline said. ``Anthony can really distribute the ball.''

Though the Falcons (8-6) produced eight goals in their four wins, Cline realizes Tuesday's tournament championship win over Canyon, when Britton punched the only goal through a crowd in the game's final minute, is typical.

``That's the way it is with us,'' she said. ``We looked a little off today. For us, hanging in there is the key.''

Reflex action: It happened so fast, Ricky Ramos never had the time to savor the biggest defensive play of the Falcons' championship defeat of Canyon.

Early in the second half, Jimmy Giordano's free kick was saved by Palmdale goalkeeper Chris Sandoval but right into the path of Pat Terry, who had an open right side of the net to kick into.

The ball was headed for the net, but was blocked by Ramos' chest and caromed away, enabling the Falcons to clear it out of trouble.

``I didn't think anyone noticed it because it happened so fast,'' said Ramos, a senior defenseman de·fense·man
