SOCCER BEAT: HART TOURNAMENT TAKES SOME VERBAL KNOCKS.

Byline: Brian Dalziel Daily News Staff Writer

Saugus High boys' soccer coach Nate Wright Nate Wright played professional American football in the NFL from 1969-1980. Professional Career
Wright earned All-Pro honors at defensive back in 1974 and 1976. He career consisted mostly of time as a defensive back with the great Minnesota Vikings teams of the 1970s.

Wright, the tournament's pool play was changed three times and the entire structure was revamped. The moves by Hart's first-year coach Ron Lindberg had some teams playing six games, which by the end of the regular season would have exceeded the CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing. Plus, inadequate officiating throughout the tournament just added fuel to the fire.

``I was upset,'' Wright said. ``There were a lot of coaches upset by the whole organization of the tournament. At least four coaches said they weren't coming back next year.''

The tournament ran smoothly under former Hart coach Robert Benevidez, and Wright said Benevidez should have been used as a tournament director this season to help Lindberg.

``What they really should have done was ask Robert to help and pay him a couple bucks to be the director,'' Wright said. ``Why as a first-year coach do you want that headache headache

 why he messed with it.''

No variety: To add to Wright's frustrations, the Centurions were forced to play two Foothill League rivals in the tournament - Canyon and Burroughs.

``Everybody's looking at the Royal tournament next year,'' Wright said. ``I don't know if we can get in, though.''

Stay tuned.

Making a point: The Foothill League has a new scoring system Noun 1. scoring system - a system of classifying according to quality or merit or amount

The coaches voted to award three points for a victory and one point for a tie. Under the old rules, a team was given two points for a win and one point for a tie.

``A lot of teams come into games playing for a tie,'' Wright said. ``The idea is to get teams to just go for it. It adds a healthy aspect to the league.''

Any questions? In case anyone questioned Hart's ability to repeat as Foothill League girls' champions, the Indians put on a dominating performance in Tuesday's league opener against Burbank.

Erin Misaki scored her 13th goal of the season in the 3-0 win.
