But he later righted himself and scored the team's first goal, which opened the floodgates and sent the undefeated Spartans (11-0, 1-0) to a 3-0 victory at San Marino (9-2-1, 0-1).

It is no secret that La Canada did not play a strong nonleague schedule. Coach Louie Bilowitz was concerned it would play a factor in this match, which featured the league's top two teams.

"A couple of games, we'd score in the first 20 seconds and just blow teams away," Andrus said. "Sometimes, it takes time to get started."

It did for Andrus. Seventeen minutes in, it appeared he had scored when he lifted a shot over San Marino goalie Michael Catherwood. But the referee A judicial officer who presides over civil hearings but usually does not have the authority or power to render judgment.

"I can see what he was saying, but I didn't think it was high-kicking," Andrus said later. But at the time, he appeared upset at the call.

Five minutes later, he was yellow-carded for arguing a call that didn't involve him. That earned him a trip to the bench.

It was the best thing to happen to him, he said.

"I got carded, so I came off, relaxed a little. I didn't want to get my second yellow," he said.

When he returned a few minutes later, he was quieter. In the 38th minute, off a pass from Josh Sweeney, he scored the team's first goal and his 20th of the season. The ball took a bad hop and bounced over the arms of a diving A DIV Associate of Divinity  Catherwood.

" Bilowitz said. "I think it loosened them up. We played much better in the second half."

Suddenly, it was 3-0 with just five minutes gone in the second half. Chap Early drilled a shot off a head pass from Cameron Adams, and Jason Cropley, who saw a first-half goal negated because he was offside off·side   also off·sides
