``We're still struggling,'' he said. ``People say we're a team on the rise. I'll believe it when we're able to win two or three games in a row against better teams.

. Seven of my 12 girls, this is their first year on varsity. That's my biggest problem.''

What doesn't trouble him is the Pioneers' outlook a year or two down the road. Simi Valley's junior varsity team For the American rock band, see .

entered the week with an 11-1-2 record and undefeated in league (6-0-1). Nine of the players on that team are freshmen who play club together. Two freshmen - Amanda Peterson and Erica Jenke - are already on varsity.

As for what happened against Westlake, the Pioneers attribute it to their attitude.

``We went out there so completely pumped,'' senior Michelle Thuotte said. ``With this team we have a lot of heat and that has a lot to do with it.''

Johnson agreed.

``We were ready to play them very, very vigorously,'' Johnson said. ``We came out hard and they didn't come out with the same intensity. We woke 'em up. Now they know they have to play.''

--Throws better than kicks: Throw-ins by Thuotte led to both goals in the Pioneers' win against Westlake. Her long throws are one of Simi Valley's best offensive weapons and have set up several goals. Although the senior is primarily a defensive player, her throw-ins helped earn her the team's MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994.  and a league title appears certain. Coach John Reich expected a good season for his Calabasas boys' team, but even he didn't think the Coyotes would do this well.

``We had a real tough nonleague,'' Reich said. ``For the life of me, I didn't expect us to be undefeated.''

Senior Itzik Rapaport leads the Coyotes with 22 goals and Danny Barth has 15, giving the team nearly 75 goals for the season - an average of more than four goals a game.

``A lot of it is good finishing and being in the right place at the right time,'' Reich said. ``Most of them, this is at least their second year on varsity. They've been together for a long time and there is an understanding of where to be, so they really are in the right place at the right time. And truthfully, a lot of it is probably luck.''

--Highly regarded: Simi Valley is the team that beat the Westlake girls, but Agoura was the one to get a considerable amount of respect from the Warriors.

Westlake coach Aerick Brown admitted he didn't clearly remember all the Warriors' early-season games as they have started to blur blur (blur) indistinctness, clouding, or fogging.

Agoura didn't take its first shot until the 66th minute and managed just three shots overall, and Brown was reminded his team had played powers such as Chaminade of West Hills, Harvard-Westlake of North Hollywood and Buena of Ventura, but Brown insisted the match was the Warriors' most difficult of the season.

``That's the toughest team we've played all year,'' he said. ``These guys played tougher than Buena.''

Buena is undefeated and ranked No. 1 in Division II.
