But the results were all that mattered for two of the nation's top club soccer teams.

Despite missing two second-half penalty shots, the Real SoCal boys' 16-under team opened the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships with a 1-0 victory Wednesday over Pennsylvania's Futbol Club Delco Hammerheads at Pizza Hut Park Current Stadiums in Major League Soccer

The Eagles, the top-ranked girls' 17-under team in the country, overcame a sluggish first-half effort against the Michigan Hawks, prevailing 2-0.

"All credit goes to the Michigan Hawks," said Eagles coach Vince Thomas, whose team defeated Michigan to capture the 14-under national title in 2004.

"This was one of the first times we played a team that held the ball better than we did. But our girls fought through it. That's the great thing about this team is they always find a way to win."

Emily Cressy, a Buena of Ventura graduate who has signed with Kansas, scored goals in the 31st and 76th minutes, the latter coming on a rebound off a shot by Nicole Sweetman (Oaks Christian of Westlake Village/UCLA).

"Emily's first goal came at a time when we really didn't have any momentum," Thomas said. "But I thought Nic's play up top was awesome. She was the difference for us."

Haley Wilson (Ventura/Oregon), Courtney Goodson (Cathedral Catholic/Texas), Amelia Mathis (Buena/UCLA), Kaitlin Paletta (Moorpark/Cal) and Kelsea Smith (Oaks Christian/Pepperdine) anchored a strong defensive effort for the Eagles, who play at 5:30 p.m. today against the Richmond Strikers Richmond Strikers is a soccer club based in Richmond, Virginia that is known for its excellent teams and coaching staff.
