SOCCER: HART GETS BEST OF ITS RIVAL DEFEATS CANYON, WINS OWN TOURNEY.

Byline: ERIK BOAL Special to the Daily News

NEWHALL -- The Foothill League matches Jan. 23 and Feb. 8 against Canyon of Canyon Country will be more meaningful than Friday's game, but no one on Hart of Newhall's girls' soccer team was downplaying the significance of the Indians' 4-2 victory in the Hart tournament final.

Against a defense that had allowed four goals all season, the Indians (13-2-1) -- ranked fifth by the Daily News -- scored fourtimes in a 19-minute stretch to close the first half en route to winning their annual event for the first time since 1998.

``There's a lot of seniors on this team and we really wanted this, especially because it's one of our league rivals,'' said Hart sweeper Michelle Mason, who helped the Indians record their third consecutive victory over No. 2 Canyon (10-1-2).

``Last year (against El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

of Woodland Hills), we were disappointed with the outcome, so this is exciting because we finally won the tournament for once.''

After Sierra Goff gave Canyon the lead in the 19th minute, Aubrie Smith scored twice in a five-minute span to give Hart the lead. Meghan Dean and Amanda Ladanyi added insurance goals before intermission to increase the advantage to 4-1.

``It sucks to lose because it's Hart, but if we're going to lose one of the three, it's really easy to say we'd want it to be this one,'' said Canyon co-coach Eric White For British economist, see Eric Wyndham White.

Hall. ``It came in groups. We scored, they scored and they scored three more. And they beat us three times on basically the same play.''

Smith benefited from well-placed passes from Sarina Coutin and Allison Carivau to increase her season total to 12goals. Penaranda assisted on Dean's goal and Dean returned the favor to Ladanyi.
