Hart snapped Canyon's 22-game league unbeaten streak Jan. 10 with a 3-2 victory. Three days later, Saugus ended a 15-match winless streak against the Cowboys cowboys, in American history.

Although Canyon isn't out of the running for a fifth consecutive league title, the Cowboys (9-3-3 overall, 2-2-0 Foothill) will complete the first round of play in no better than third place. Hart (17-3-0, 4-0-0) and Saugus (12-1-1, 4-0-0) square off for first place at Hart today at 3:15 p.m.

``Canyon was our biggest game, emotion-wise, but it wasn't the game,'' Saugus coach Lisa Rollo said. ``Anytime we play Canyon, there's so much hype hype 1   Slang

, so to win is huge. But right now, Hart is our biggest test.''

Saugus, which boasts one of the area's toughest defenses, has given up only one goal in league play and seven in 14 games this season. The Centurions also rely on talented midfielders Betsy Kyle <noinclude></noinclude>

Hart, which has 12 shutouts in 20 games, is known for an explosive offense. The Indians have scored 87 goals, led by sophomore Sarina Coutin's 31 and junior Brittany Clark's 17.

Coutin tied Laura Qualls' 1997 school record for goals in a season with a pair in Tuesday's 5-0 victory over Burbank. She has 51 goals in 43 career games.

Saugus returned the favor by knocking the Indians out of the Southern Section Div. II playoffs with a 2-1 victory in the regular-season finale For the music notation program, see .

Valencia was the last team to win a league title before the Cowboys' run began, accomplishing the feat in 2001. Before that, Hart won seven consecutive league titles, sharing the crown with Saugus in 1995, the Centurions' last championship.

With a 2-0 victory Tuesday over Valencia, Saugus has the league's longest current unbeaten streak at nine games. Hart has won 12 of 13 games, the only loss being a 4-2 setback against El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

``Beating Canyon was a big win for us,'' Hart coach Louis Romero said. ``But it's very important for us to take it one team at a time, and the next team for us is Saugus.''

--Not losing hope: Canyon coach Steve Ladanyi hasn't given up on his team's bid to win a fifth consecutive title. He knows things must go precisely to form in the final six games for the Cowboys to have a chance at sharing the championship.

``The good news is we get to play (Hart and Saugus) again, and they play each other twice,'' Ladanyi said. ``We need to win out and hope that they split, and then we'll rely on coin flips (to determine playoff seeding) after that.''

Canyon, which has gone 31-1-8 in Foothill play the past four years, lost to Hart and Saugus in a four-day span this season.

``Right now, we have to focus on two things, and that's winning league and making the playoffs,'' Ladanyi said. ``As long as we're in the playoffs, I still think we can beat anyone they put in front us. We proved that (by beating second-ranked Buena of Ventura) in the Buena tournament.''
