SOCCER: GALAXY BEGIN WITHOUT 'PANDO'.

The Galaxy opened its preseason training camp this week without Guillermo ``Pando'' Ramirez, the hero of its MLS Cup The MLS Cup is the final game of the Major League Soccer postseason, officially recognized as the championship of the league. The trophy is called the Alan I. Rothenberg Trophy, after the founding chairman of MLS.  2005 triumph last November.

The Guatemalan midfielder, who played for the Galaxy last season on loan from Municipal, scored in overtime to give L.A. a 1-0 triumph over New England New England, name applied to the region comprising six states of the NE United States—Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. The region is thought to have been so named by Capt.  and its second Major League Soccer championship. The Galaxy chose not to retain Ramirez after a disappointing season, in which he scored once with one assist in 24 games.

Costa Rican defender Michael Umana also was released.
