SOCCER: CHIVAS RECEIVES HONORS.

Byline: MATT ZIMMERMAN Staff Writer

Two days after a disappointing playoff exit, Chivas USA received some good -- though certainly not unexpected -- news.

A pair of individuals in their first season with Chivas USA were honored as Jonathan Bornstein Jonathan Rey Bornstein (born November 7, 1984 in Torrance, California) is an American soccer defender and midfielder, who currently plays for Chivas USA of Major League Soccer.  was named Major League Soccer's Rookie of the Year Rookie of the Year may refer to:

  • Rookie of the Year (film), a 1993 starring Thomas Ian Nicholas
  • Rookie of the Year (album) by rapper Ya Boy

Bornstein beat out teammate Sacha Kljestan and Real Salt Lake's Mehdi Ballouchy for the honor. The fourth-round pick out of UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

He had six goals and four assists for Chivas, which advanced to its first playoff series before falling 3-2 to Houston on aggregate goals.

``It benefits me both personally and for the team to be a versatile player, and I like being that type of player,'' Bornstein said. ``To be honest, I kind of like left fullback. You get to defend and attack at the same time. You get a little bit more freedom.''

The coaching honor is the second for Bradley, who also won in his first season as a professional head coach with the 1998 MLS Cup champion Chicago Fire. Bradley came to Chivas USA after three seasons in New York New York, state, United States

Bradley took a Chivas team that won only four games in its inaugural season to the playoffs.

``I never see it as vindication,'' Bradley said about presiding over Chivas' quick rebuilding effort. ``I always knew the work that was going on in New York. When you coach long enough, let's face it, (ups and downs ups and downs

When the possibility of the honor was discussed with Bradley last week, he noted the importance of his staff of Preki, Martin Vasquez and goalie coach Zak Abdel.

``It's about having a group that challenges each other every day,'' Bradley said. ``I try to challenge all the people around me to have ideas and say what they think. On the coaching side, it's very much a team effort.''
