Argentine phenom Lionel Messi took charge in the second half, setting up goals by Ronaldinho and Javier Saviola and scoring one of his own, as Barcelona concluded its North American tour Saturday night with a 4-1 rout of Major League Soccer's NewYork Red Bulls.

Ronaldinho, the two-time reigning FIFA World Player of the Year, scored twice in front on 79,002 at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., as the European champions spoiled former U.S. coach Bruce Arena's debut as Red Bulls coach and sporting director.

``Ronaldinho is truly a special player,'' Arena said. ``We all knew that before this game. He brings such a great attitude to the field. He's one of the finest players in the world.''

It might have been worse, but New York goalkeeper Tony Meola made five superb saves in the first half and backup Jon Conway pushed wide a shot by Ronaldinho, who had pirouetted through the Red Bulls backline. The Brazilian star converted a 13th-minute penalty kick after former UCLA star Marvell Wynne brought down Samuel Eto'o and restored Barca's lead five minutes into the second half from Messi's feed.

Messi made it 3-1 on a give-and-go with Eidur Gudjohnsen in the 61st minute, then sent a through ball for Saviola to finish in the 87th.

Former French World Cup star Youri Djorkaeff scored in the 38th for the Red Bulls, tapping home Edson Buddle's feed after Dema Kovalenko, in his first match since returning to MLS from Ukraine, stripped Ronaldinho on the right flank.

Real Madrid romps: Ruud van Nistelrooy converted a penalty kick at the end of the first half and Robinho beat two defenders to add another goal 20 minutes into the second half as Real Madrid, Barcelona's fiercest rival, wrapped up a two- game U.S. tour with a 2-0 victory at MLS's Real Salt Lake.

Fabio Cannavaro and Emerson, went 1-0-1 against MLS clubs, drawing 1-1 Wednesday night with D.C.United in Seattle. Saturday's game drew 45,511 to Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City.

Guadalajara shows strength: Guadalajara, finally at full strength, notched its first victory Saturday in the Mexican Primera Division's Torneo Apertura, netting goals a minute apart midway through the second half in a 3-1 triumph over visiting Santos.

Cruz Azul, Jaguares and Toluca improved to 2-0-0, but Pachuca, winner of last spring's Torneo Clausura, has opened with two losses after falling 3-1 at Monterrey.

Omar Bravo scored two goals for Guadalajara, which lost 1-0 at Toluca in last week's opener with primarily a reserve team.

Keller wins opener: Kasey Keller stopped Jiayi Shao from close range as Borussia Moenchengladbach topped promoted Energie Cottbus 2-0 in the American goalkeeper's debut as captain in a German Bundesliga opener.
