SOBOROFF SETS RECORD IN MAYORAL FUNDS RACE.Byline: Rick Orlov Staff Writer In a preview of the high-stakes mayoral contest coming next year, businessman Steve Soboroff Steve Soboroff (born August 31, 1948) is a real estate developer and president of Playa Vista. Mr. Soboroff is the Chairperson of the Leavey Center for the Study of Los Angeles at Loyola Marymount University. reported Thursday that he already has raised $1.35 million, far outpacing what his major - and better known - opponents are expected to raise. Soboroff, a parks commissioner and adviser to Mayor Richard Riordan Richard J. Riordan (born May 1, 1930) is a Republican politician from California, U.S. who served as the California Secretary of Education from 2003–2005 and as Mayor of Los Angeles from 1993–2001. Riordan ran for Governor of California unsuccessfully in 2002. , said he has received contributions from more than 3,000 people in coming up with the biggest war chest ever for an individual mayoral candidate at this stage of the campaign. The campaign reports, for the period ending Dec. 31, are not due until Monday. Soboroff campaign aides, however, said they decided to release theirs early to show the level of support he is receiving. ``We're proud of what we've raised and think it shows an incredible amount of strength for a first-time candidate,'' consultant Ace Smith said. ``It shows he has beaten, hands down, a bunch of entrenched en·trench also in·trench v. en·trenched, en·trench·ing, en·trench·es v.tr. 1. To provide with a trench, especially for the purpose of fortifying or defending. 2. politicians.'' Soboroff is one of five major announced candidates in a field that includes City Attorney James Hahn For the Iowa politician, see . James Kenneth "Jim" Hahn (born July 3, 1950) is an American politician from the Democratic Party. He was the Deputy City Attorney (1975-1979), City Controller (1981-1985), City Attorney (1985-2001) and Mayor of Los Angeles, California , Councilman Joel Wachs Joel Wachs served for several terms as Los Angeles City Councilman for the 2nd district. He was first elected by defeating incumbent James B. Potter. While in office, Wachs chaired the Public Works Committee and vice-chair of the Environmental Quality & Waste Management , Assembly Speaker Antonio Villaraigosa Antonio Ramon Villaraigosa (born Antonio (Tony) Ramon Villar, Jr. on January 23, 1953) is the mayor of Los Angeles, California. He is the first Latino mayor of Los Angeles since Cristobal Aguilar in 1872. , D-Los Angeles, and Rep. Xavier Becerra Xavier Becerra (born January 26 1958), an American politician, has been a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives since 1993, representing California's 31st congressional district (map), which is based in Los Angeles. , D-Los Angeles. All are expected to be able to raise enough money to qualify for city matching funds Noun 1. matching funds - funds that will be supplied in an amount matching the funds available from other sources cash in hand, finances, funds, monetary resource, pecuniary resource - assets in the form of money that could bring each campaign up to the $3 million level. Soboroff has indicated he will not seek the matching funds and is prepared to use as much as $2 million of his own money in the race. Riordan has endorsed Soboroff in the race and has helped in fund raising for the man who serves as Recreation and Parks Commission president and chair of the Proposition BB Oversight Committee. Bill Carrick, consultant to City Attorney James Hahn, said the campaign expects to report raising about half as much as Soboroff. ``I think he's going to need that money,'' Carrick said. ``He's totally unknown and never had any public exposure. He's a Republican candidate in a Democratic city and has used his best weapon, with Mayor Riordan. ``This is just the first act. It's a long way until game time,'' Carrick said. Smith countered that the support given to Soboroff shows the public wants a candidate from outside the political circle. ``Not only have we more than doubled the money and support of . . . Hahn, we've raised more money than all the declared candidates combined,'' Smith said. Carrick disputed that. ``He's been in city politics for the past seven years,'' Carrick said. ``Steve Soboroff is as much an entrenched politician as anyone else.'' Villaraigosa earlier this month reported raising more than $300,000 during his first month as an official candidate. Wachs has refused to discuss his contributions, saying only that he would be competitive with other candidates. Becerra, who announced only last week, will not have to file this time.
