SOBOROFF NETS MONEY, TIES AT FUND-RAISER.

Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  mayoral candidate Steve Soboroff Steve Soboroff (born August 31, 1948) is a real estate developer and president of Playa Vista. Mr. Soboroff is the Chairperson of the Leavey Center for the Study of Los Angeles at Loyola Marymount University.  went to Beverly Hills Beverly Hills, city (1990 pop. 31,971), Los Angeles co., S Calif., completely surrounded by the city of Los Angeles; inc. 1914. The largely residential city is home to many motion-picture and television personalities.  on Thursday night in his second fundraiser this week, picking up the endorsement of actor Kirk Douglas and his wife, Anne.

The fundraiser for about 50 people, at $1,000 a person, was held in a private residence.

``This is a small event,'' Soboroff said. ``We're planning on having a much larger event with the entertainment industry next year.''

While Douglases do not in Los Angeles and cannot vote for Soboroff in the 2001 race, they have long and close ties to him.

When he was in college, Soboroff served as an assistant to the family in a variety of jobs, including driving their children.

Earlier this week, Soboroff pulled in what aides said was $500,000 at a fundraiser hosted at the Brentwood home of Mayor Richard Riordan Richard J. Riordan (born May 1, 1930) is a Republican politician from California, U.S. who served as the California Secretary of Education from 2003–2005 and as Mayor of Los Angeles from 1993–2001. Riordan ran for Governor of California unsuccessfully in 2002. . Soboroff is a special advisor to the mayor and serves as president of the Recreation and Parks Commission.

City Councilman Joel Wachs Joel Wachs served for several terms as Los Angeles City Councilman for the 2nd district. He was first elected by defeating incumbent James B. Potter.

While in office, Wachs chaired the Public Works Committee and vice-chair of the Environmental Quality & Waste Management
 and City Attorney James Hahn are the other declared candidates for mayor in 2001. County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky and state Assembly Speaker Antonio Villaraigosa, D-Los Angeles, also are said to be considering the race.

Riordan, who has endorsed Soboroff, is prevented from seeking re-election by term-limit rules.
