SOAWR at the African Union Summit--Khartoum/SOAWR au Sommet de l'Union Africaine.Members of the Solidarity on African Women's Rights The effort to secure equal rights for women and to remove gender discrimination from laws, institutions, and behavioral patterns. The women's rights movement began in the nineteenth century with the demand by some women reformers for the right to vote, known as suffrage, and (SOAWR) organised several events during the African Union African Union (AU), international organization established in 2002 by the nations of the former Organization of African Unity (OAU). The AU is the successor organization to the OAU, with greater powers to promote African economic, social, and political integration, (AU) Summit that took place from 17-24 January, 2006 in Khartoum, Sudan. The following activities were organised: A public event on Islam and Women's Rights In partnership with the Afhad University for Women in Omdurman (The Sudan), SOAWR hosted a Symposium to popularize pop·u·lar·ize tr.v. pop·u·lar·ized, pop·u·lar·iz·ing, pop·u·lar·iz·es 1. To make popular: A famous dancer popularized the new hairstyle. 2. and build public support for the Protocol on Women's Rights in Africa. A Press Statement on the Protocol was read and individual interviews were done to respond to questions on the SOAWR campaign. Outcomes of SOAWR campaigns * Ministers were informed on the status of their respective country with respect to ratification of the Protocol. * Sudanese women's organisations that participated in the Symposium committed to follow up and to continue the campaign on the ratification of the Protocol in their country and beyond. * Participants released a Declaration at the end of the Symposium calling upon the Sudanese government to ratify the Protocol without delay. The Declaration was also circulated during the official dinner offered by the government of Sudan to the Head of States and during the First Ladies' meeting. Conference de Presse L'equipe de la SOAWR a organise une conference de presse en vue de continuer a elever le profil du Protocole. Plusieurs medias nationaux, regionaux et internationaux presents lors du Sommet de l'UA avaient ete invites. Une declaration de Presse sur le Protocole a ete lue et des interviews individuelles ont ete faites pour repondre aux questions relatives a la campagne de la SOAWR. Resultats de la Campagne de la SOAWR * Les ministres ont ete informes sur l'etat de leurs pays respectifs en ce qui concerne la ratification du Protocole. * Les organisations feminines soudanaises qui ont participe au Symposium ont pris un engagement de faire le suivi et de poursuivre la campagne pour la ratification du Protocole dans leur pays et ailleurs. * Les participants ont fait, a la fin du Symposium, une Declaration appelant le gouvernement soudanais a ratifier le Protocole avec effet immediat.
