SO. SECTION VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFS: VALENCIA STOPS SANTA BARBARA IN SEMIFINALS.

Byline: Daily News

At one point Wednesday night, fans at Hart High of Newhall were serenading the Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  boys' volleyball team with loud chants of ``overrated Overrated was a Horde World of Warcraft guild, based on the US Black Dragonflight Realm. No disrespect to Santa Barbara, the top seed in the Southern Section Div. II playoffs, but fourth-seeded Valencia was dominant in a 25-21, 25-19, 26-24 semifinal victory to reach its fifth successive championship final.

Valencia's explanation for its dominating play was simple: Last month, Santa Barbara (21-6) beat Valencia in three games in the final of the Dons' tournament. It was a bitter loss that stuck with the Vikings, and it was all they were thinking about heading into the semifinal showdown.

``We were embarrassed, mad and disappointed with that loss, and we wanted to play them again ever since it happened,'' Valencia middle blocker Teddy Goetz said. ``It gave us all the incentive to come in here and do what we did tonight.''

It also helped that Valencia's coaching staff devised a perfect gameplan to offset Santa Barbara's strength.

``We picked the right gameplan against them, and we were able to answer anything they had,'' said Valencia coach Mark Knudsen, who guessed correctly on a number of individual matchups, giving Valencia a big boost.

Valencia, which beat Santa Barbara in last year's finals, received a match-high 12 kills from Jamey Ker. Sean Carter added nine and Stephen Cornelius seven, and Kevin Ker contributed 39 assists.

Goetz, the only returning player from last year's championship team, is looking forward to another trip to the final.

``We are going to have fun,'' he said. ``When we have fun, good things happen, just like tonight. And that is going to be the plan on Saturday.''
