SO. SECTION VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFS: VALENCIA BACK IN SEMIFINALS.Byline: Daily News After four consecutive trips to the Southern Section division finals, including back-to-back Div. Valencia defeated Santa Barbara in five games in a nonleague match March 16. The Dons earned a measure of revenge by sweeping the Vikings in the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions on April 23. ``This is the fun part of the season,'' Valencia coach Mark Knudsen said. ``When the (previous) season is over, you wait nine months to build back up to this point. We're looking forward to playing Santa Barbara again. We were disappointed the last time we played them and we're hoping we don't feel that same disappointment again.'' During its run to the past two division titles, Valencia relied heavily on Tony Ker - now at UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University) UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX - to carry the team in critical matches like Friday and Wednesday. Fortunately somebody always steps up when we need it most.'' Along with Cornelius, Goetz repeatedly took advantage of Laguna Beach's inability to defend the middle attack, tying freshman Jamie Ker for team-high honors with 10 kills. ``Volleyball is the biggest game of runs and it's all about grabbing the momentum,'' said Goetz, who closed out the match with a kill and an ace to cap a four-point Valencia run. ``At the end of each game, we were the team that was hungry enough to go on the run. ``In this game, you know you're going to fail at some points. But I've been playing with these guys since the eighth grade and they have a ton of heart.'' Sean Carter added seven kills and Neil Benveniste had six kills for Valencia, which rallied from a 14-12 deficit in the third game to score eight of the next 10 points, two coming on Laguna Beach rotation violations. - Erik Boal DIVISION I --Loyola d.
