SO. SECTION SOFTBALL PLAYOFFS: NO DOUBT THIS TIME VALENCIA TAKES CARE OF BUSINESS, WESTLAKE.

Byline: Daily News

The Valencia High softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  team knew exactly what it was getting into when it drew Westlake High in the first round of the Southern Section Div. I playoffs.

Two years ago, Westlake nearly upset Valencia in the first round and the Vikings, seeded second in Div. I, weren't about to cut it close again.

This time, the Vikings scored early, taking some of the enthusiasm out of Westlake, and went on to a 3-0 victory at home.

Valencia got on the board in the second inning when Jessica Spigner reached on an infield single and came home when Mallory DiFatta was hit in the back by a throw, running to first. They added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on RBI RBI

``We had a tough draw. They were an at-large team, but they're very tough,'' said winning pitcher Jordan Taylor (16-3), who gave up only one hit and struck out eight.

``We wanted to get ahead early. It's a lot easier when you get a lead because you know you can be less cautious.''

The only hit Taylor allowed was an infield single to Westlake's leadoff batter, Monica Gonzales, in the top of the first.

Valencia (26-3), will face the winner of Friday's first-round game between Rancho Alamitos and Rio Mesa of Oxnard.
